Although there are such sayings, it is easier to understand when explained below. The twenty-sixth target. Furthermore, one might think, is it joyful to be born among beings called Asuras? Actually, it is not joyful. Because by nature they are jealous of the glory of the gods, they always have great unease in their minds. They fight with the gods from time to time, but the Asuras have less power of merit, so they suffer greatly from being killed, beaten, dismembered, split apart, and so on. Mostly belonging to the dark side, they do not like the Dharma. Even if some believe, they are those obscured by the ripening of karma, and have no chance to realize the distinctions. Then, one might think, is it joyful to be born among the gods of the desire realm? There too, it is not joyful, because they recklessly indulge in desires, and their lives are exhausted in vain. Furthermore, the weaker gods are expelled from their abodes by the stronger ones, causing suffering. Some gods with little merit have nothing but a lute, and are very poor. When they see other wealthy gods, they feel disappointed in their own merit, and have immeasurable mental suffering. In particular, in the realms of the Four Great Kings and the Thirty-Three, the suffering of fighting with the Asuras is very great. All the gods of the desire realm commonly have the suffering of death and falling, which means that seven days before death, the gods experience five signs of death: the color of the body becomes unsightly, the mind becomes depressed, they dislike their seats, the garlands of flowers become old, black stains appear on their clothes, and dust emanates from their bodies. When these signs appear, their servants and friends abandon them and go to other gods. Although they are attached to the desires of the gods, they know that they must inevitably separate. There is no way to prevent it. It is like a drum maiden losing a pebble, a dragon being carried away by a Garuda, a fish being swallowed by a great wave, or a ship breaking in the middle of the great ocean. The duration, if it is seven days for the gods, even the shortest, taking the example of the Four Great Kings, is four hundred and fifty years. The burden is heavy, the time is long, and the suffering of falling means that after the gods die, the chance of being reborn as gods is very rare, and the chance of being reborn as humans is also very small, and mostly they fall into the lower realms.

They are born there. As it is said: When one transmigrates from the world of gods, if there is not even a little remainder of virtue, then one will involuntarily be born as an animal or a hungry ghost, or in any of the hells. The gods' clairvoyance allows them to know where they will be born at the time of death, and even if they are born as humans, they are not satisfied with sensual pleasures and see it as full of suffering. If they are born in the three lower realms, they know that they must experience the suffering there, and unbearable mental suffering arises. They think that the mental suffering there is greater than the physical suffering of the three lower realms. The twenty-seventh contemplation. If one is born as a god in the higher realms, is there happiness? There is no happiness there either. Those higher realms, although ordinary beings do not see obvious suffering, the noble ones see that they are not free from the nature of the suffering of conditioned existence, and they are like being intoxicated by samadhi, so ordinary beings cannot go from one quality to another, and having tasted the taste of samadhi, they cannot bear to part with that flavorful samadhi, and there are also those who lose their samadhi and die. Especially, all the ordinary beings living there, when the momentum of their previous karma is exhausted, they will again take birth in the desire realm. In the past, when they were practicing worldly samadhi in a human body, at that time, although they felt that the formless samadhi was very comfortable and relaxed, they degenerated into ordinary people without any reliable training, and their afflictions were strong and their suffering increased. What is the essence of such a state? The twenty-eighth contemplation. Second, contemplating all of samsara as suffering: The preliminaries and so on are as before, starting from the thought that the suffering in the hells is like that, up to the hungry ghosts, animals, humans, asuras, gods of the desire realm, gods of the form realm, and gods of the formless realm, all are like that suffering. All of the three realms of samsara are of the nature of suffering, such as the three sufferings, six sufferings, or eight sufferings, filled with suffering, and completely surrounded by suffering. Suffering
