Wandering aimlessly as impermanent waves pass by. Eating each other. Constantly fearing the emergence of enemies, suffering. The suffering of being eaten alive, etc., is unbearable. These beings scattered in the realms of humans and gods, those not tamed by humans, are constantly uneasy in their minds due to the fear of enemies. Those tamed by humans also suffer from having their hair pulled, noses pierced, being beaten, burdened with heavy loads, and being killed for their meat, blood, skin, and bones, etc., suffering from slaughter and exploitation. Furthermore, hunger, thirst, heat, cold, fatigue, etc., are similar to the suffering of hell beings or pretas. The main suffering is that due to extreme ignorance, they eat each other. Like guarding against enemies who eat human flesh, they must constantly dwell in fear. The object of meditation and the conclusion are the same as before. The preliminary and subsequent practices are also the same as before. The fourteenth contemplation. These are the condensed essentials. Thus, even the suffering of the three lower realms alone is unbearable. There is a need for a refuge that can save us from them. Who can save us? Brahma or Indra, or even a Chakravartin king cannot save us, let alone other heretics? Then who can save us? The Three Jewels can save us. I take refuge in the Guru, Yidam, and Three Jewels. I request the Buddha to be my teacher, the Dharma to be my practice, and the Sangha to be my friends in accomplishing it. Also, refuge is, the protector is the Dharma, and those to be protected are sentient beings. Even the Buddha cannot save someone like grabbing the hair of a person being swept away by water. Rather, he teaches the Dharma and causes people to practice according to the Dharma, thereby saving them. Generate faith in the Buddha and act according to the Dharma he taught. How the noble Sangha acts, we should also imitate them and do the same, we should constantly contemplate this. At the beginning and end of each session, it is important to diligently perform all the virtuous deeds of recitation related to taking refuge. It is best to begin the pure refuge of the Lesser Vehicle from this point. Thus instructed, the fifteenth contemplation. At this time...

It is important to explain the rough meaning of refuge to the students, and it is also important for the students to keep it in mind. In some old texts of the Lamrim, the stages of the small spiritual person end there. There is also a way to intersperse karma and its effects, but according to the custom of most Lamrim books, it is best to conduct separate guidance on karma and its effects. Fourth, the guidance on karma and its effects is divided into general thinking about karma and its effects, and specific thinking. First, white, virtuous karma will only produce happy results, and black, evil karma will only produce painful results. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between black and white karma and their respective effects in order to adopt and abandon them. Whether it is virtuous or evil karma, it may be small at the time of the causal action, but it will increase greatly at the time of the ripening of the result. Even the smallest increase will increase a hundredfold or a thousandfold. Larger increases are immeasurable, so it is very important to adopt and abandon. If the black and white karma that one has created is not destroyed by the opponent force, it will not disappear before the result ripens. If it is not created by oneself, neither black nor white karma will arise in one's own mindstream. Therefore, it is important to be careful about what to adopt and abandon. Meditate in this way. This is the sixteenth meditation topic. Second, to think separately, including thinking about the causes and effects of black karma and thinking about the causes and effects of white karma. First, the preliminary and subsequent practices are the same as before. At the end of the seven-branch offering, one must add refuge. In this way, all the sufferings of the three lower realms and the heavens are not produced without cause or condition, but are produced by non-virtuous karma. Meditate on this basis. Although there are many kinds of non-virtuous actions, if we only collect what is important in terms of what to adopt and abandon, then there are the ten non-virtuous actions. Among them, the three non-virtuous actions of the body are: killing, that is, intentionally killing with the intention to kill, without mistaking the object to be killed, and without stopping the intention to kill until the person being killed dies. Taking what is not given, that is, robbing or stealing other people's property without their permission, etc., in whatever way, as long as the thought arises, "I have obtained it." Sexual misconduct, that is, engaging in sexual activity with an object with whom it is not appropriate to engage in sexual activity, engaging in impure conduct, that is, with someone else's
