Instructions on Entering (the Path). Namo Guru. To Guru Padmasambhava. A man named Ngok Sherab Gyalpo, who was sixty years old, had not studied but had faith, was in a secluded place at Drakpoché. The Teacher stayed for a year. Ngok did not request teachings, and the Teacher did not give teachings. After a year, the Teacher intended to leave. Ngok made a mandala offering of gold and offered it to the Teacher, saying: "Precious Teacher, please have compassion on me. Firstly, I have little learning. Secondly, I have little wisdom. Thirdly, I am old. Great Teacher, please teach me something easy to understand, that cuts through doubts, is easy to realize, has a great view, is easy to practice, and is a teaching for an old man on his deathbed." Having requested this, the Teacher pointed his staff at the old man's heart and gave this instruction: "Listen, look at this self-aware mind of enlightenment. It has no shape or color. It has no direction or boundary. It has no beginning, middle, or end. Initially, it is unborn, therefore empty. In the middle, it does not stay, therefore empty. Finally, it has nowhere to go, therefore empty. If you recognize that emptiness, you will recognize your own face. You will understand the nature of Dharma. The mind sees the mind. The original state is established. That awareness, the mind of enlightenment, is not made of anything. It is self-arisen and abides in itself. Therefore, there is no need to search for it elsewhere. It is easy to realize the meaning of Dharma. In the meaning of Dharma, there is no clinging with hope and doubt. The mind transcends the extremes of permanence and annihilation. There is no cause to become a Buddha, because the Buddha is one's own mind. There is no cause to go to hell, because hell is one's own mind. There is no need to hope for a Buddha, because one becomes a Buddha oneself. There is no need to doubt hell, because awareness is self-purifying. There is nothing to do with Dharma, because awareness, the nature of Dharma, is self-illuminating. The great view of the natural state is inherent in oneself. Therefore, it is decided that there is no need to search for it elsewhere." Having understood this, if you wish to practice, wherever you are, that is the solitary place of the mountain retreat of the body. Whatever appears in external appearances is self-appearance. What is clear is self-clear. What is empty is self-empty. Self-arisen, self-pacified. It is placed free from all extremes of elaboration. Then, since external appearances arise as a friend, appearances are purified in their own place. Since they are purified in their own place, appearances are taken as the path.
