Not clinging to appearances, whatever appears, Whether it is land, stones, mountains, rocks, plants, forests, houses, and castles, wealth and grain, enemies and friends, siblings and companions, sons and husbands, etc., there is no clinging to any of them. Although it appears, not clinging to its meaning and without attachment, that is the act of purifying external objects. Even if we say purifying external objects, it doesn't mean that nothing exists. Without attachment and clinging, clear and empty, like a reflection in a mirror, although it appears, there is nothing to grasp or hold onto. Because it is like emptiness, although it appears, it is empty in its own place. The instruction for purifying the mind that clings inwardly, so that awareness is liberated in its own place, is: Whatever thoughts arise from the mind's conceptual movement, and whichever of the five poisons arises, do not grasp with the mind whatever is thought. The movement naturally subsides into emptiness, and is not stained by the fault of movement. Saying that inner awareness is without impurity does not mean it is like inert matter such as earth and stones. It means not clinging to awareness with the impurity of thoughts. For example, it is like a jewel going to the Golden Island. Just as there is no name for earth and stones once one has gone to the Golden Island, similarly, once one is liberated into the wisdom of self-awareness, it is said that there is no name for conceptual thought. In between, the instruction for the joyful experience of clear light is: When practicing it, the self-awareness is without impurity, clear and limpid. By practicing it, there are three: bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality. An experience arises that is not tainted by attachment, clinging, and the mind. Because that is the Buddha's intention, one knows oneself. For example, one does not need to deliberately meditate on something that is one's own, thinking, 'Whose is this?' No thoughts of a yogi thinking 'it is not' will arise. Just as in that example, once one recognizes that one's own awareness is the nature of reality, one does not need to meditate thinking that all phenomena of samsara are the nature of reality. Even without meditating, one does not stray from the meaning of the nature of reality; it is meditating without meditating. Knowing that all phenomena are without inherent existence is the son of wisdom. Awareness recognizes the realm of reality, which is the act of knowing oneself. At that time, there is no high or low in birth, no big or small in action, no sharp or dull in mind, no big or small in wisdom, no much or little in learning, no old or young in age, no clear or unclear in knowledge, easy to understand with little effort, easy to practice with great meaning, and not afraid of the experience at death, old woman.

Practice in this way. Life is short, so exert effort. It is better to contemplate wisdom for a moment than to be a slave to wife and children for a thousand years in vain. Quickly obtain the instructions given by the guru. There is no end to the affairs of this life, so practice until the end. Give this instruction to the old woman who is not afraid of death. Having said this, he pointed his finger at the heart of the old woman and gave her instructions, hence the name "The Old Woman's Pointing Instruction." The old woman and her attendant were both liberated and attained accomplishment. For the sake of future generations, Kharchen Zang Tso Gyal wrote it down. The Old Woman's Pointing Instruction is complete. Thus, these stages of the outer and inner paths are the infallible words of the great teacher Padmasambhava Vajra. The translator Jñana Kumara and Nup Sangye Yeshe have an unbroken Kagyu lineage, and the treasures of the upper and lower treasure troves, as well as the great treasure revealer Dorje Lingpa, are presented with words and meanings that are indistinguishable, so they should be regarded as a place of great trust. These all have self-commentaries and extensive explanations of the parts of the instructions. May there be auspiciousness always). The Second Volume of the Treasury of Instructions. The Common Stages of the Outer Dharma Sutra and Tantra, a Heap of Jewels, by the Precious Teacher Padmasambhava.
