Having properly taken the Dharma of... , having eliminated the defilements of not knowing the self-nature of the eight consciousnesses, when all eight consciousnesses are liberated into self-awareness, they obtain the name "the eight consciousnesses are transformed into the four wisdoms," and it is held that these appear as the form body in other appearances. In short, Self-Born King and others consider that the nature of the mind with defilements, which is unborn, is the naturally abiding lineage, and the undiminishing radiance is the expanding lineage. Therefore, this is called the union of the two bodies with defilements. The nature of the perfectly pure mind, which is unborn, is the self-benefiting Dharmakaya, and the undiminishing radiance appears as the other-benefiting Rupakaya. Therefore, it is considered to be the union of the two bodies free from defilements. Such a basis, the Tathagatagarbha, pervades the continuum of all sentient beings, but it is obscured by the adventitious defilements spoken of in the nine similes from the Uttaratantra Shastra. As it is said in the scripture, "Existing, it is not seen; non-existing, it is seen." Like this, it is mistaken in a reversed way. The defilements that obscure the essence, combined with the nine similes, are: the defilements that exist only in the continuum of beings who have not yet entered the path, the karma of merit and non-merit that is solely the cause of samsara; desire; hatred; ignorance; and the nature of the violent or coarse all-arising of these three equally mixed, these four are shown by the lotus, the bee, the husk, and the mud. The nature of the ignorance imprints that exist in the continuum of the Arhats of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, which obscures the essence, is shown by the simile of the treasure of the poor man underground. The defilements of the Mahayana path of seeing that exist in the continuum of individual learners and the defilements of the path of meditation that exist in the continuum of the noble ones are shown by the two, the skin and the rotten cloth. The defilements of the ten bhumis of the grounds, the defilements that depend on the impure seven grounds and below, and the ground defilements that depend on the pure three grounds, are shown by the two similes of the womb and the gold in the mud. The essence of these is also the Buddha in the lotus bud, the honey of the bee, the fruit of the husk, the gold of the mud, the treasure underground, the sprout of the skin, the Buddha image in the rotten cloth.

Homage! The lord of beings in the womb, is shown by examples such as gold in the mud. In the three states of impure, pure, and extremely pure, the essence does not change. That very essence, when completely defiled by sudden impurities, is called a sentient being. One who possesses both impurity and purity is called a Bodhisattva abiding on the path. When extremely pure, it is called a Tathagata. Among these, the state of samsara generated by karma and afflictions is impure. The state of being liberated from karma and afflictions but not liberated from the ground of ignorance and habitual tendencies is a Bodhisattva. And being liberated from that as well is the state of a Tathagata. These three are also established in relation to the illusion of conventional truth, but in terms of the essence of the ultimate realm, there is no change. From beginningless time, the abode of all phenomena, is surrounded by four difficult-to-understand and inconceivable places. As it says in the Sutra of the Abhidharma, "The realm of beginningless time, is the abode of all phenomena, because it exists, samsara and nirvana are attained." Thus, having beginningless time, the Tathagatagarbha, which is the basis for delusion and liberation of the phenomena of samsara and nirvana, is extremely difficult for others to realize except for the Buddha alone. Because it is surrounded by four inconceivable places, it is said to be taught to Bodhisattvas of extremely sharp faculties. The four places are: In the Uttaratantra, "Because of having impurity and affliction, because of being without all affliction and pure, because of the undifferentiated dharma, because of spontaneous non-conceptualization." Thus it is said, the Thusness with defilements is simultaneously pure and also possesses all afflictive defilements, which is the meaning of the inconceivable realm. The Thusness without defilements is originally not defiled by defilements, and later, when practicing the path, it also transforms into purity, which is the meaning of the inconceivable Bodhi. The undefiled Buddha's qualities, such as the ten powers, exist as the undifferentiated nature of phenomena in the state of ordinary beings, so there is no difference between before and after. Later, after clearing away the defilements, new
