This is an explanation of the aspect of negating the uselessness of the ground. The glorious Rangjung Dorje considers the very ordinary consciousness that is inseparable from the nature of space and wisdom, like a reflection of the moon in water, free from truth and falsehood, and beyond grasping and characteristics, to be the Sugata-garbha. Kunkhyen Longchenpa says in the commentary on the Yizhin Dzö: "The spontaneously arisen wisdom of individual awareness, empty and clear, free from elaboration and veiling, is the Sugata-garbha." The Uttaratantra says: "As it was before, so it is later. It is the unchanging nature of reality." This is what is meant. Their followers all speak in the same way, with only slight differences in the coarseness or subtlety of their explanations. Having thus generally stated their views, there are two aspects to the actual explanation of the text: that which is in accordance with the common Paramita vehicle, and that which is explained with the adornment of the unique characteristics of the unsurpassable mantra. The first is: The mind-essence, luminous, self-existing nature, the gotra: Possessing three characteristics, increasing, transforming, truly taking, Obscured by adventitious stains in the manner of nine similes. The mind-essence, inseparable from the sixty-four qualities of the Buddha, the self-purified dharmadhatu, the nature of luminosity, is called the self-existing gotra, the basis of all samsara and nirvana. It is said to possess three characteristics: having come down from beginningless time, being obtained by the nature of reality, and being similar to the distinctions of the six sense spheres. The first shows that it has come down from beginningless time and is not newly acquired. The second shows that it exists in the nature of reality without distinction for all sentient beings. The third shows that on top of the six sense spheres of sentient beings, there are causes of equal fortune that are very similar to the six uncontaminated sense spheres.
