However, it is first necessary to ascertain the clear light of the general meaning. As it is said in the Abhisamayalankara: "The nature of all phenomena, selfless, is like the sky, without defilement. With the vajra of emptiness wisdom, constantly meditate on emptiness." Therefore, regarding the actual method of meditation, all the treatises of the great accomplished ones mention that by means of either shamatha or vipassana, one gathers the outer world and inner beings and enters into clear light. Among these, in the Five Stages, it says: "The disciple who has received the oral instructions should then learn the two yogas: the stage of holding completely and the stage of subsequent dissolution." Here, two meditations are taught: holding completely and subsequent dissolution. These are also explained in the same text: "From the head to the feet, as long as it reaches the heart, the yoga correctly enters the end; this is said to be holding completely. Movement and non-movement, first make the clear light appear, then in that way become the self; this is the stage of subsequent dissolution. The breath of air in the mirror, how it completely dissolves into it, likewise the yoga correctly ends; one should enter it again and again." Therefore, correctly meditating on these two meditations is the extremely profound key point of the wind and bodhicitta gathering in the heart. By gradually dissolving earth, water, fire, wind, and consciousness, five signs will appear. As it is said in the Guhyasamaja Tantra: "Like a mirage is the first, like smoke is the second, like a sky appearance is the third, like a burning lamp is the fourth, like a cloudless sky, the nature of which is the fifth, always appears." After that, the four emptinesses will appear in sequence. That is, the appearance of emptiness like moonlight appearing in a cloudless sky, the increase of emptiness like sunlight appearing, the great near attainment of emptiness like the darkness of night enveloping, and the emptiness of all things or clear light like the dawn sky free from the three obstacles of cloudiness, etc., these are explained in the Five Stages. Regarding this, the previous lamas consider that relying on outer and inner methods, the wind dissolves into the heart, thereby being able to generate the special four emptinesses, which is the clear light of meaning, the actual clear light; and the four emptinesses produced merely by the natural dissolution of the wind are the clear light of example, which is similar to clear light.
