One should settle evenly on the meaning where nothing is found. This method should be applied to whichever of the six root afflictions arises. Moreover, having recognized whatever thought arises, such as unlabelled thoughts, one should meditate in the same way. This is the yoga of non-apprehension, i.e., meditating on the emptiness of inner awareness as inseparable. Ultimately, even the object to be examined and the wisdom of individual analysis themselves, like fire produced by friction, should be allowed to vanish into the expanse in a state where nothing is found, and one should settle without grasping. These points are condensed in Jowo Je's instructions on Madhyamaka: 'Also, like this, the past mind has ceased and perished, and the future mind has not arisen or occurred. The present mind is also very difficult to examine in this way. It has no color and is without shape. It is not established because it is like space, or because it is separate from one and many, or because it is unborn, or because it is naturally luminous, etc. Examine and destroy it with the weapon of reason. When will you realize that it is established?' Thus, since both are not established as the nature of anything and are merely non-existent, the wisdom of individual analysis itself is also not established. For example, just as when two sticks are rubbed together, the two sticks themselves are burned and destroyed by the cause of fire arising, and then the fire that burns them also subsides on its own, likewise, when all phenomena of self-characteristics and general characteristics are established as non-existent, the wisdom itself becomes invisible, luminous, free from all elaboration, and not established as the nature of anything. Eliminate all causes of sinking and agitation, etc. During that interval, do not conceptualize anything as knowable. Do not grasp at anything. Abandon all mindfulness and attention. Until the enemy or thief of conceptual thought with characteristics arises, one should maintain awareness in that state. As it is said. Fifth, the measure of the accomplishment of vipashyana is explained at the time of attaining extreme pliancy. Having analyzed individually with the wisdom of individual analysis and meditated, until extreme pliancy is attained, it is vipashyana that is concordant, and from the time it arises, it is vipashyana that is characterized. The nature and manner of arising of extreme pliancy are as explained in the context of shamatha. Furthermore, through analytical meditation, by its own power, extreme

When one is able to practice skillfully, it is said in texts such as the Definitive Explanation of Intent and Shantipa's Instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom, at the time of accomplishing vipashyana. This is similar for both vipashyanas that focus on the extent of things and the nature of things. Third, there are three aspects to learning the method of union: the actual method of learning, when to unite, and its result. The first point is: Although the Madhyamikas have different methods of generation, they agree on the union of shamatha and vipashyana to be generated. Meditating on these three in sequence, with unwavering focus, is essential. Here, in order to accomplish the non-dual wisdom of the union of shamatha and vipashyana, although the various Madhyamika masters explain the methods of generation differently according to their respective views, they agree on the union of shamatha and vipashyana to be generated. Among them, the master Lekdenjé says that one should first generate shamatha focused on objects such as ugliness and love, and then, on that basis, generate vipashyana arising from the power of reasoning and detailed analysis. The master Shantideva also says that one should first cultivate shamatha by meditating on the mind of enlightenment, and then, on that basis, generate the wisdom of vipashyana focused on emptiness. The master Kamalashila, in the Intermediate Stages of Meditation, first generates shamatha focused on objects such as the body of the Buddha, and then accomplishes vipashyana by analyzing the nature of that very object of shamatha. The master Chandrakirti accomplishes shamatha and vipashyana by relying on the view that examines suchness. All of these are pure and unerring paths, and they all agree that shamatha, vipashyana, and union are established as a cause-and-effect relationship, so they must be cultivated in a definite order, and they all agree that unwavering focus with one-pointed mind is the most important for everything. The second point is: When meditating with signs, the vipashyana that discriminates phenomena while focusing on the image of shamatha unites. When one attains non-conceptual vipashyana, it unites because the essence becomes one. So, when do these two, shamatha and vipashyana, unite? When cultivating shamatha and vipashyana with signs, the non-conceptual mind that focuses on the image of shamatha and the vipashyana that discriminates phenomena both naturally enter simultaneously, and that is their union.
