It is as stated. Among the proponents of philosophical tenets, although there are extremely numerous internal distinctions and classifications, if summarized according to disparate categories, there are two: the external non-Buddhist Tirthikas (Mu stegs pa) of other schools, and the internal Buddhists (Sangs rgyas pa) of our own school. Therefore, their principles will be explained in sequence. J2. Second, regarding the detailed classification, there are two parts. N1. A brief explanation of the traditions of the external Tirthikas (Mu stegs pa). N2. An extensive explanation of the vehicle of higher states (Mngon mtho). N1. The first has three parts. T1. Essence. T2. Classification. T3. An extensive explanation of that very topic. T1. The first is: Regarding externalists, They are renowned as "Mu stegs." This means: those who turn away from this teaching and this teacher, though they investigate objects of knowledge with worldly wisdom, are called "externalists" (Phyi rol pa) because they lack a path compatible with the true nature of nirvana (Myang 'das). However, because they are somewhat close to it, dwelling on the 'edge' (Mu) and 'platform' (Stegs) of liberation, they are called "Mu stegs." From the commentary on "Noble Conduct" (Bzang spyod 'grel pa) composed by the great translator Yeshe De (Lo chen Ye shes sde): Regarding what is called "Mu stegs can" (Tirthika), "Mu stegs" is, for example, like a step (Them pa) built at the edge for entering a pond or a lake, or a convenient ford for crossing (a river), which is called "Mu stegs." Similarly, the "Mu stegs" for entering the ocean of nirvana (Myang ngan las 'das pa), and the ford of the skillful path for crossing the river of cyclic existence ('khor ba), are called "Mu stegs." Therefore, whoever possesses that path and practices it, those are "Mu stegs can," as it is stated. Its definition is: a proponent of philosophical tenets who, through the four gates of view, meditation, conduct, and result, has become an opponent of Buddhism (Sangs rgyas pa). T2. Second, [the classification] is: Designated, emanated, and autonomous, three types. This means: generally speaking, concerning "Mu stegs" (Tirthikas), there are three types: the designated (Btags pa ba), the emanated (Sprul pa), and the autonomous (Rang rgyud pa). The designated (Btags pa ba) are, as stated in the Lankavatara Sutra (Lang gshegs): As long as the mind operates, The world is a distant one (Rgyang 'phen). And, From other sutras, it mentions rotten renunciants (Dge sbyong rul ba) who adhere to the words of "worldly distant ones" (Rgyang 'phen pa). And, those who assert the reality of a 'person' (Gnas ma bu) and 'aggregates' (Phung po) etc., as well as those with wrong views whose lineage is cut off, and who are weary of the bliss of tranquility, these are designated as "Mu stegs" (Tirthikas). These are the designated ones. Regarding the emanated (Sprul pa), from the "Sutra of Truth-Telling" (Bden smra'i mdo), it states: Wish-fulfilling jewel holds...

If they meet, The truth will never arise. Likewise, the Buddha, jewels, and non-Buddhists (Tirthikas) Will never appear in the same realm. Know that these doors of the Tirthikas are skillful in meditation and mastery of supernormal powers. Those who possess wisdom and skillful means, Manifest various transformations. And so on, these are extensively taught in various Sutras. Regarding the Svātantrika school, from the Prajnaparamita Sutra (Yum): "As for those hundred types of itinerant ascetics (parivrājaka) who came with the intention of seeking quarrels, I have not seen even a single white (virtuous) dharma in them," and so on, just as it appears. III. Extensive Explanation has three parts: 1. The Dhyana (Meditator) School; 2. The Tarka (Logician) School; 3. Incidentally, the barbarians (Kla Klo) and others are shown as objects to be abandoned. I. First, The latter, the Dhyana (Meditator) School, possesses five supernormal powers. Among the three classifications mentioned above, the last one, "Tirthika Svātantrika," is the philosophical school to be explained here. Among them, there are two: the Dhyana (Meditator) School and the Tarka (Logician) School. The first one is: the Dhyana School possesses the five supernormal powers of the formless realm. As Acarya Aśvaghoṣa said: "The great Rishi possesses five supernormal powers." Just as it is said. Furthermore, from texts such as *Extensive Wisdom* and *Burning Logic*, it is explained that the three levels of dhyana—inferior, mediocre, and superior—can recall thirty, sixty, and ninety kalpas respectively. Such individuals have existed since beginningless samsara; although the Tarka (Logician) School is generally similar, most of the philosophical schools to be explained (later) arose in this very kalpa. II. The second part [Tarka (Logician) School] has two sections: 1. Briefly stating and explaining nihilism; 2. Presenting the divisions of eternalism. I. First, The root of the Tarka (Logician) School is eternalism and nihilism. Among them, the Cārvāka (Gyang phen pa) have three kinds of beings: Sentient beings arise from manifest and non-manifest natures. Because they do not see causes and conditions, they assert that there is no past or future life. And since they deny karma and so forth, there is not even a higher realm (heaven). The general classifications of Tirthika philosophical schools, in the *Good Essence Collection*, lists: Vaiśeṣika, Sāṃkhya, and Brahmā-vādī, these three. In *Burning Logic*, it lists: Sāṃkhya, Vaiśeṣika, and the Secret End of the Vedas (Vedanta/Mīmāṃsā), (170a).
