Previously, explanations for most tantras arose. Among these, exemplified by the 'Six Treatises of the Pig-Headed Oral Instructions,' many traditions of explanation also emerged for numerous categories of Indian treatises on Abhisamaya (realization). Furthermore, there were eight renowned traditions for explaining 'Mahamudra,' and so forth. In the Nyingma tradition, there was the root of the eighteen Semde (Mind Division) teachings, the 'All-Creating King' (Kunjed Gyalpo Tantra); the root of the four Anuyoga Sutras, the 'All-Collecting Wisdom Sutra' (Kün Dü Rigpai Do); and the commentary by Nubchen (Sangye Yeshe) on the Explanatory Tantra 'Gathering of Intentions' (Gongpa Düpa), titled 'Armor of Darkness,' which expounded upon these. Also, 'Arrangement of the Secret Path of the Buddha' and 'Clear Vajra Samaya of the Charming Vajra,' among others, had an uninterrupted lineage of explanation until later times. This is exemplified by Gollo Zhonnu Pelwa, who stated that at that time there were explanations and transmissions of over forty-one tantric treatises. The numerous subtle explanation traditions of tantric and oral instructions that arose in both the New (Sarjma) and Old (Nyingma) Tantra schools are beyond count. Among these, regarding the explanation tradition of Mahamudra: Initially, Jowo Je (Atisha) (172na) translated and explained the *Uttaratantra Shastra* and taught about the *Chimp'ur Doha* and *Magical Net* cycles. Subsequently, Je Marpa (Marpa Lotsawa) bestowed the lineage of oral instructions, which continues unbroken to this day. Then, the Great Pandita Vairochana Rakshita from Kosala came to Tibet, translating and explaining the three Doha cycles. Following this, Rupa extensively explained the *Essence of Meaning*. Then, the Indian Vajrapani, Acharya Vajrapani, expounded the *Seven Sections of Accomplishment*, the *Three Essential Meanings* (referring to the three Doha cycles), and the treatises including the *Subtle Essence of Accomplishment*; also, nine groups of teachings following the *Nature of Oral Instructions*, nine groups following the *Father Tantra*, and nine groups following the *Mother Tantra*—these twenty-seven are bound by the four mudras: Karma Mudra, Dharma Mudra, Mahamudra, and Samaya Mudra. He taught the 'six connections': view connected with scripture and reasoning, meditation connected with experience, conduct connected with time, result connected with the benefit of others, path connected with signs of warmth, and empowerment connected with oral instructions—this is known as the 'Upper Tradition.' Subsequently, the Nepalese Asu explained the Doha cycles, and thousands of lineage holders emerged, which is known as the 'Lower Tradition.' Then, Je Rechungpa received the Dharma cycles from the Formless Dakinis and Asu's...
