The perception that this is suffering, the perception that it is not suffering, and the perception of whether this sound is pleasant or unpleasant, etc., all arise dependent on the mental (106) consciousness. As stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "There, seeing the meaning is consciousness; its distinction arises from mind." The occasions when mental consciousness does not arise are as follows: Master Vasubandhu said in the commentary on the Thirty Verses: "The arising of mental consciousness is, constantly without perception, and the two samādhis, etc." Because in those five situations, mental consciousness is temporarily gathered into the ālaya-vijñāna, and the focus on the Dharma is not clear, it should be understood that this is a situation where it does not arise. Second, explaining the immediately preceding condition together with the afflicted mind, there are two parts: briefly explaining by name, and extensively explaining the characteristics. The first is: "The immediately preceding and afflicted mind, two." It is said. If one wonders what the immediately preceding condition is, which is said to be one of the four causes of the arising and ceasing of the six consciousnesses, some consider it to be in the category of the sixth consciousness, and some consider it to be non-existent in reality. However, this is because the Śrāvakayāna does not accept the classification of the six consciousnesses, and does not understand the tenets of the Mahāyāna, which accepts the eight consciousnesses. Therefore, the mind abiding in the ālaya-vijñāna is divided into two parts, namely the immediately preceding mind and the afflicted (107) mind. The second part has three sections: explaining the immediately preceding mind, explaining the afflicted mind, and briefly summarizing the characteristics of both. The first is: "From the six, this change is known." This means that although the six consciousnesses arise, they immediately become the cause of arising; when the six consciousnesses cease, they also immediately become the cause of placing the power seeds of the six consciousnesses in the ālaya-vijñāna. Therefore, it is the immediately preceding cause of both arising and ceasing. That is, when the six consciousnesses cease, the immediately preceding consciousness, which is said to be one with the mental realm, will carry the seeds to the ālaya-vijñāna. And, like waves arising from water, it immediately agitates and acts on the mind abiding in the ālaya-vijñāna from all the seeds, thus producing the immediately preceding mind. If the cause of the six consciousnesses arises as one, then only one immediately preceding mind arises, and a second one does not arise. Even if many causes of arising are nearby, only that many can arise.

arise. Therefore, when the previous six consciousnesses cease, immediately afterwards, the subsequent cause will immediately combine, so it is immediately following. Therefore, just like the number of moments of arising and ceasing of the six consciousnesses, the immediately following (mind) also arises in connection with the same number. (108) How is it known that it is like this? It is known through the direct perception of the mind endowed with the yoga of the union of calm abiding and insight, and through inference from the profound and vast teachings of the Buddhas. Second, from "this" to "mind," it is said that the immediately following mind, as a part of this (ālayavijñāna), is known as the afflicted mind, which also arises from the ālayavijñāna. This is because one has not realized the purity of one's own mind, and with an afflicted mind, one clings to the ālayavijñāna, giving rise to ego-clinging, as well as pride, thinking oneself to be supreme, and attachment and clinging to oneself as more precious than others, and because one has not realized the non-existence of self, one is constantly accompanied by the four afflictions, such as ignorance. Any aggregate that, when analyzed by reason, cannot be established and will be destroyed, that is, clinging to the five aggregates as belonging to oneself, and oneself being in union with the aggregates, and oneself existing in the five aggregates, and the five aggregates arising from oneself, thus there are twenty kinds. Moreover, each of these is divided into three times: past, present, and future, making sixty kinds. In general, clinging to the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, giving rise to all of these, therefore it is called the afflicted mind. In the Thirty Verses (109) by Master Vasubandhu, it is said: "Abiding in that, it constantly arises and turns; because it focuses on that, it is called mind; this consciousness is always with self-view; obscured and unspecified, it is said to be defiled; it is constantly accompanied by the four afflictions." This says that this consciousness is the place of afflictions, therefore, from this, all valid and invalid thoughts arise. This (afflicted mind) is obscured by the habitual tendencies of the ālayavijñāna, and its nature is unspecified, therefore it is the root of all conceptualizations and afflictions, so it is also said to be irrational conceptualization. From this, by meditating on the afflictions that look inward, one can abandon what should be abandoned. Because of this cause, the six consciousnesses
