If, through the power of meditation, one returns to the seven consciousnesses, there will be no new accumulation of habitual patterns, and like an ocean dried of rain, there will be no cause for the arising of the ālaya-consciousness, so the ālaya-consciousness will cease. Because it relies on the conditions of the seven consciousnesses, it is also said to be the consciousness of conditions. Furthermore, just as the cause of all defiled dharmas is the ālaya-consciousness, all defiled dharmas are also established as the causal condition of the ālaya-consciousness, because no other causal condition is found. These reasons are explained in detail in the *Compendium on the Great Vehicle*, so here it should also be understood as being mentioned incidentally with summarizing words. Thus, the ālaya-consciousness that is spoken of, if speaking from the aspect of purity, it is permissible to call it the cause of pure nature. If it is said that the ālaya-consciousness is the cause of the wisdom of the Buddha who has transcended suffering, that is not permissible. In the *Unabiding Lineage* it says: "The ālaya is the basis of all, but it is not the basis of purity." However, there are many explanations for this. Then, are not the white dharmas, which are not different from the enlightenment of the Buddha, and which are realized by relying on the correct view, also established on the ālaya-consciousness? Then, how are the pure dharmas produced? This is because the suchness of all dharmas, the mind that is naturally pure, relies on the tathāgatagarbha, the dharmakāya. The detailed circumstances of this should be understood from the *Treatise on the Tathāgatagarbha* and its commentary, composed by the omniscient Rangjung Dorje. The second part, the explanation of the eight consciousnesses transformed into wisdom and the kāyas, has two parts: a brief explanation of the general meaning and a detailed explanation of the text. The first part: The nature of the ālaya-consciousness is non-recognition, and it becomes the cause of delusion due to the movement of grasping and the grasped. Therefore, wandering in the three realms, clinging to sentient beings, this insurmountable existence, this great ocean of suffering, arises. Liberation from the adventitious stains of clinging to the five aggregates of sentient beings, and complete transformation of the state, manifests as the five wisdoms possessing the nature of the four kāyas. In short, the basis of clinging to sentient beings is the five aggregates, and its proximate cause is mind, intellect, and consciousness (117).

La. The cause of Buddhahood arises from the transformation of the five aggregates of sentient beings. As stated in the *Compendium on the Great Vehicle*: Furthermore, if asked when one attains mastery, when does one attain mastery over the Dharmakāya? In short, it is attained in five ways: Because of the transformation of the aggregate of form, one attains mastery over the field, body, marks, excellent signs, infinite sounds, and the invisible crown of the head. Because of the transformation of the aggregate of feeling, one attains mastery over dwelling in happiness that is faultless, immeasurable, and vast. Because of the transformation of the aggregate of perception, one attains mastery over teaching through all collections of names, collections of words, and collections of letters. Because of the transformation of the aggregate of formation, one attains mastery over emanation, transformation, gathering retinues, and gathering white dharmas. Because of the transformation of the aggregate of consciousness, one attains mastery over wisdom like a mirror, equality, discrimination, and accomplishing activities. Thus, mastery is attained. So it is said. Among these, the manner of transformation of the first four aggregates can be understood from that very treatise. Here, I will briefly explain how the transformation of consciousness (118) becomes the four wisdoms of the Buddha. First, the four causes for attaining wisdom and the four causes for transformation are explained. First, the wisdom of hearing and retaining the teachings of the three baskets is the cause of mirror-like wisdom. Meditating on equanimity towards all sentient beings is the cause of equality wisdom. Teaching the Dharma to others is the cause of discriminating wisdom. Accomplishing the activities of others is the cause of accomplishing activity wisdom. As stated in the *Ornament of Realization*: Because of retention and because of equanimity of mind, the four wisdoms also arise. So it is said. Second, as stated in the *Sūtra Entering the Three Bodies*: The transformation of the ālaya-vijñāna is mirror-like wisdom. The transformation of the mind abiding in the ālaya is equality wisdom. The transformation of the mind's consciousness is discriminating wisdom. The transformation of the five sense consciousnesses is accomplishing activity wisdom. So it is said. If those wisdoms are summarized, they can be included in two: knowing suchness and knowing all phenomena. First, all dharmas

The ultimate absence of phenomenal elaboration is the wisdom that knows reality as it is (119). As stated in the Two Truths: "When knower and known, one does not see their own nature following after, then, because there is no characteristic, it does not arise; because it abides steadfastly, it does not stand up." Thus it is said. The complete and manifest realization that all phenomena encompassed by the three times are like illusions is the wisdom that knows all that exists. As stated in the Two Truths: "With a single instant of wisdom, one pervades the entire mandala of knowable objects." Thus it is said. Although there is no distinction between equality and subsequent attainment in the wisdom of the Buddha, it is merely a designation based on the manner of knowing. Second, the actual explanation of the meaning to be explained is sixfold: explaining mirror-like wisdom as the Dharmakaya, explaining equality wisdom, explaining discriminating wisdom, explaining those two as the Sambhogakaya, explaining accomplishing wisdom as the Nirmanakaya, and explaining the Dharmadhatu wisdom as the Svabhavikakaya. The first has two parts: what is to be purified and what purifies, and the result of purification, the wisdom of the Kaya. The first is explained from the perspective of outer and inner. It is said, "It is said from the perspective of outer and inner." It is said that the Alaya-vijnana, which is the nature of all outer objects and inner consciousness just mentioned, is the basis or root of all grasping and clinging, and the very nature of ignorance obstructs even the ground of Buddhahood, so it is the root of all that is to be abandoned (120). The antidote to abandoning this, let alone worldly meditation, even the ultimate wisdom of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers who realize selflessness cannot abandon it. It is said that it must be destroyed by the Vajra-like Samadhi, the last of the ten stages. The second is, "From what is it spoken?" It is said, "From what time is it spoken?" It is said, "When there is no attachment to anything and no obstruction anywhere, the Vajra-like Samadhi, which has become the antidote to subtle and subtle obscurations, destroys the Alaya-vijnana together with the two obscurations and habitual tendencies, and when that Alaya-vijnana ceases, it transforms into the mirror-like wisdom of the Buddha." The meaning of the words is also like this: Just as an image can appear depending on a clear mirror, from the mirror-like wisdom, the other three wisdoms and the Sambhogakaya also appear in the manner of an image.
