There is no inherent nature of anything. Similarly, emptiness and so on are not separate from liberation by that very nature. For example, it is like a person with a wine disease being cured by wine, poison being eliminated by poison, iron being cut by iron, and so on. Since affliction itself is liberated by itself, it is called self-liberation. There are three reasons for establishing self-liberation: it is established by reason, it is established by scripture, and it is established by logic. It is established by reason because all liberation is self-liberation, which is established by the reason of the nature of phenomena. If it were liberated by something else, it would not be established. If there were other-liberation, it would be like it is impossible for one thing to appear as different forms. The characteristic of a thing is determined by the thing itself. It is established by scripture, as it is said in the Mind Section: "Liberation is self-arisen, not from others." It is established by logic, as the greatness of self-liberation is accomplished and established by irrefutable logic. Thus, appearance is self-liberated because it does not depend on other antidotes. The way of liberation is that there is no other than oneself liberating oneself. In other scriptures, it is also said that those with desire are liberated by making desire the path, and so on. As it is said in the Hevajra Tantra: "Just as fire burns things, it is warmed by the fire itself." Appearance is the very liberation of appearance itself. There is no other cause or condition for liberation other than appearance. Because it is liberated without a basis, there is no basis for existence. Without a root, it is the very nature of mind without a root. As it is said in the Secret Essence Tantra: "This mind-nature without a root is neither male nor female, nor neuter, neither color nor form, without characteristics and without lineage." Therefore, there is no place to turn away from other than itself. There is no place to go, it has never been born. There is no place from where it came. Because there is no other dharma other than itself, it is called self-liberation. For example, it is like a snake's knot that unties itself without anyone untying it. Third, relying on the key points of Trekchö and Tögal, it is taught without relying on scriptures and transmissions. That is, liberation in that very moment by merely seeing directly. It is like liberation by the meeting of mother and child. Without transforming appearance with the mind, without cutting it off with appearance, by leaving it as it is, it is naturally pure.

liberation. There are four aspects to Cutting Through to Liberation: the meaning of Cutting Through to Liberation, the reason for establishing it as Cutting Through to Liberation, the manner of liberation, and examples. The meaning of Cutting Through to Liberation is: simply by seeing, one is liberated in the seeing itself. Does one see, hear, or merely perceive and become liberated in the very first instant? To this, the reckoning of the direct experience of reality is added. There are three reasons for establishing it as Cutting Through to Liberation: reasoning, scriptural authority, and logical proof. The reasoning is: it is reasonable because nothing is designated as a support or object of focus. Appearance is liberated simply by appearing on the basis of appearance, and awareness is liberated simply by changing on the basis of change. Through the key points of emptiness itself, because form is directly seen, it is shown merely as the experience of form, and thus one is liberated within it. Similarly, it is with sound and so forth. How does one know that it is liberated? Because seeing it as form cuts off the elaboration of what is not form. Because it is directly placed upon it, it is liberated within it, because awareness that clings to other things does not arise. The scriptural authority is: In the Golden Essence Tantra, it says, "Through the view of the great Cutting Through to Liberation, both Buddhas and sentient beings are liberated." The logical proof is: it is reasonable through the proof of impartiality and self-purification. Like this, appearance is Cutting Through to Liberation, because it is placed in the place of Cutting Through, liberated in the place of placement, and vanishes in the place of liberation. The manner of liberation is: by practicing on a fragment of phenomena, one is Cutting Through to Liberation in the fragment, not going anywhere, not coming from anywhere, and having nowhere to go. There is no change from remaining anywhere. By practicing on the entirety of phenomena, all appearances become Cutting Through to Liberation. The example is: for example, like an impartial person going to a temple, there are no visible boundaries. Fourth, based on the key point of being free from extremes and dependence, the key point of not clinging to any dependence is: because one is liberated from the extreme of one side, one does not abide in two, and because one is liberated from two, one does not abide in one either. Similarly, it is with both and neither, and so forth. An extreme is the extreme of existence—appearance, the extreme of non-existence—non-appearance, and the cessation of the four extremes of both and neither is termed liberation. There are three aspects to being free from extremes and dependence: the meaning of being free from extremes, the reason for establishing it as being free from extremes, and the manner of liberation. The meaning of being free from extremes is: existence
