The measure of seeing is light, the measure of the unchanging blue space, the measure of the round and clear lamp, the measure of the subtle and moving awareness, know it as the measure of seeing. The measure of habituation is threefold: from the blue arise five colors, appearing as a cubit in size, is the first measure of habituation. Then, when one is very familiar with it, only the appearance of a rainbow arises, that is the measure of extreme habituation with it. Then, when it is about the size of a country, when one is supremely habituated with it, all appearances arise as light, arising is the completion of the measure of habituation. From the roundness, patterns of brocade, when it appears on the tip of one's nose, it is the first measure of habituation. Then, upward to the space between the eyebrows, when it becomes clear like a mirror, it is the intermediate measure of habituation. All appearances are as bindus, when they arise and remain steady, it is the supreme measure of habituation. If one looks at it again and again, like a bee circling nectar, if one stays in the place of looking, it is the supreme measure of habituation. The measure of very accurate habituation, without movement or flickering, without the appearance of day and night, is the measure of extreme habituation. One's own self-arising form, like a string of beads, in the spaces like joints, inside the bindu the size of a mustard seed, the form appears very subtle, and all appearances appear as form, it is the measure of stable awareness. The appearances of earth, water, fire, and wind, when the appearances of the four elements cease, with the light of the five colors, wherever one looks, it appears, it is the measure of stable space. One's own body on top of light, like a stack of wooden bowls, a stack of bindus rising upwards, it is the measure of a stable lamp. Thus it is said. The third, the instruction on ascertaining the manner of appearance, the appearance of space and awareness is most precious at all times. From the Lion's Complete Strength it says: When appearances are in fragments, the wise should examine them well. When it is very subtle and moving, one should abide in habituation. When flickering, subtle, and moving, one should grasp the seeing well. When round, subtle, and swirling, the wise should stabilize unwavering samadhi. When flickering, burning, and form-appearing, one should grasp the expansion of appearance through habituation. When all truly appear, the wise say one should gather the appearances. When there is no attachment or clinging, the wise should know the method of grasping.
