The Ninth Vajra Place: Extensive Explanation of the Stages of Determining Signs and Measures. The Ninth Vajra Place: Extensive Explanation of the Stages of Determining Signs and Measures. Next, regarding the determination of signs and measures for those who have practiced, there are two: a brief presentation of the essence and an extensive explanation of the nature. The first is that, since the nature of Great Perfection has become space, there are four confidences: confidence without fear even in the suffering of hot and cold hells; confidence without doubt of cyclic existence in the happiness and suffering of cyclic existence; confidence without hope in the ground of nirvana; confidence without joy or attachment to the qualities of the Buddhas. The first is that even when hearing about the suffering and lifespan of the lower realms, there is no fear or apprehension because one has decided that happiness and suffering are impossible for the knowledge that has never been deluded from the beginning, and one believes that cyclic existence is only a name and does not exist on the basis of knowledge, so one is confident that one will not go to the lower realms again. The second is that since cyclic existence is only a name, knowledge arises nakedly, and since it reverses karma and maturation, there is no fear of falling into cyclic existence. The third is that one realizes that the essence of knowledge does not abide in a nirvana that is liberated and blissful, so one is free from the hope of attaining it. The fourth is that one has decided that there is no Buddha separate from knowledge itself, so there is not even a particle of joy or attachment to the qualities to be attained by going elsewhere. Thus, the four confidences are also present in the yogi whose own knowledge, the self-born wisdom, has manifested the meaning of original purity, the great exhaustion of phenomena from the beginning. It reverses samsara and nirvana, goes to the place where the nature of phenomena is exhausted, and when one's own ground becomes like the sky, it is called the measure of the Thus-Gone One in the irreversible ground. As it is said in the Tantra of the Heap of Jewels: "With the four great confidences of unchanging view, one also grasps the measure of irreversible wisdom." And in the Garland of Pearls: "The measure is the yoga of the four confidences." So it is said. The second has three: the general signs and measures of certainty in practice, the signs and measures of the time of certainty in instructions, and the numerical signs and measures of certainty in the three times. The first has two: a brief presentation and an extensive explanation. The first is from the Transcendent Scripture: "Thus, from having practiced, the signs and characteristics are as follows: the body is light and appears transparent, without touching the ground and without obstruction, speech..."

The power is exhausted, and the words are depleted. The mind is able to transfer. The eyes, ears, nose, and tongue, all the body's senses are exhausted; this is the extent of becoming without self-nature. Thus it is said. From Rangshar: The extent of seeing the King of Awareness, this should be properly grasped. Staying alone brings happiness, because self-appearance arises as a friend. It is in accordance with the minds of others, because it does not separate from one's own nature. One becomes without attachment and clinging, because one goes to one's own ground. One will not desire anything, because one has found one's own meaning. Even like a cottonwood petal, because insects and worms are flying. Thus it is said. The extensive explanation has three parts: the signs of complete liberation from the diligence practiced in this life, the signs of liberation in the bardo, and the certainty of the signs of transference into the natural nirmanakaya. From The Vajrasattva Mirror of the Heart: O friends, to those who abide in this teaching, prophesy thus! These are the signs that will appear before that person passes into nirvana: delight in staying alone, the body as light as a cottonwood petal, not desiring to associate with people, feeling like flying in the sky, a feeling of joy when this appearance ceases, no attachment to body and life, this appearance is not interested in anything, awareness is clear without being obscured, awareness is naturally slow, happiness in association, no afflictions can arise, even if afflictions arise they are not held onto, no attachment arises to beautiful forms, no hatred arises to ugly forms, by the power of samadhi no thoughts of food and drink arise, even when associating with people one acts in accordance with the minds of others. These are the signs of complete nirvana. Nirvana is also of two kinds: complete and perfect Buddhahood, and manifest complete Buddhahood. Among these, complete and perfect Buddhahood is Buddhahood without remaining aggregates. For the individual who attains manifest complete Buddhahood, light, sound, vibrations, earthquakes, and so on will occur. There are two kinds of light: appearing in the form of a halo, and light rising upwards standing as a ladder.
