There are two explanations. The first is from the *Beyond Mind*: In this, the experience of increasing wisdom, colors and shapes, both inside and outside, are clearly pervasive, and they definitely increase from above to above. At this time, it is a sign of physical and verbal well-being, corresponding to the measure and order of appearances. From the appearance of complete wisdom and the appearance of pure Dharma-nature, the three appearances are completed and then turn into exhaustion, which is called the fruit. Thus it is said. The second is from *The Blazing Lamp*: By the key point of habituation, it transforms into the fivefold red ignorance, becoming a person of space appearance, and this obtains the self-mastery of awareness. Thus it is said. And from *Beyond Mind*: Thereafter, effortless appearance arises, the comings and goings of the wind element, and even the shapes like mirrors, also appear as two or three parts. By constantly habituating to that, the light of the five colors, appears only as a flicker, and the visible range is only like a country. In this, after obtaining the measure of habituation, within the bindu, together with the body, it remains for some time in the half-body images. From that, five by five in pairs, connected by extremely bright bindus, having the appearance of father-mother images, and after the exhaustion of illusion, it is the pure land. At this time, the measure of body, speech, and mind, when the respective appearances are seen, matures in oneself, the signs are complete, and the measures of exhaustion are all manifest. In this, depending on the size of diligence, by days, months, and years, it will definitely be accomplished at its respective time. In the unchanging times, it reaches its respective measure. Thus it is said. Therefore, if diligent ones enter into actual practice, and practice day and night without laziness, the best will be three years and one month, the middling will be four years, five months, and six days, and the lowest will be seven years, ten months, and fourteen days, in the ground of the Dharma-nature, the originally pure, as stated in the book of signs and measures of the Tathagata. The third common topic is to establish the key points of space and awareness, which is divided into three parts: generally showing the classification of space and awareness, separately explaining the methods of practice, and summarizing the meaning by determining the three key points. The first part has three parts: generally showing the essence, separately explaining the distinctions, and showing the way to advise realization. The first part also has two parts: the reality of the essence and showing the differences. The essence has two parts: the essence of space is the radiance of light that extends from azure into five colors.

Yes, although the essence of awareness is truly within, its radiance shines outward, hence it is called awareness, and it appears in the form of a string of beads. As it is said in the "String of Pearls": For example, a string of golden beads, strung together by a skilled craftsman. Awareness knows and is aware of everything, unsoiled by mindless samsara. A string of beads is interconnected. And as it is said in the "Lion's Perfected Power": The lamp of awareness-wisdom, is the inherent nature of all sentient beings, appearing in two forms: the lamp of empty bindu and the lamp of awareness-dhātu. It appears in a form that is neither together nor apart. Thus it is said. In the special instruction, there are five: basis, characteristic, place, time, and realization. The actual basis is that which relies on citta, the awareness that holds the ground, just as the light of a lamp relies on the lamp, the light of actual awareness abides in the light-sphere and radiance. As it is said in the "Jewel Array": When the single bindu, self-perfected, in the center of one's own citta-maṇḍala, is the meaning of the Great Perfection that has been there from the beginning, the secret meaning is the expanse of perfected awareness. The lamp of empty bindu and the two lamps of self-arisen dhātu, transcend the limits of empty and not-empty, spontaneously manifest without effort, abiding naturally for the sake of perfecting appearance. Thus it is said. The dhātu and awareness are perfectly adorned, abiding in the great, spontaneously perfect bindu. Thus it is said. There are two characteristics: the radiance that makes the dhātu the self-place of awareness abides in the ultimate five elements, and the awareness that exists in the movement of the winds is the nature of the creator who establishes the boundary of the dhātu. As it is said in the "Lion's Perfected Power": The characteristic of awareness is as follows: subtlety, radiance, string of beads, and movement. The characteristic of dhātu is as follows: vastness, abundance, density, emptiness, and endlessness. It possesses the nature of clarity, warmth, coolness, lightness, and movement. It is the boundary of pervasion and circumference. Thus it is said. The appearance of dhātu is the self-radiance of the five wisdoms, and its characteristic is, again, in that same text: The characteristic of wisdom is as follows: arising and what has arisen, self-clarity, primordial, knowing, and realization. It is clarity, brilliance, and vastness. Thus it is said. From the string of beads arise countless appearances of form, and its characteristic is also said in the "Perfected Power": The characteristic of form is as follows: immutability, clarity, emptiness, and non-conceptuality.
