I prostrate. Since the mind that gathers, beginning with the ālaya-vijñāna, has become a number of defilements, wise ones should distinguish between mind and wisdom. Thus it is said. Fourth, regarding the nature of these two, there are two aspects. The nature of mind is established as a mistaken appearance, possessing the characteristics of the three realms. In the *Madhyamaka* it says: "What is called 'mind' is mistaken conceptualization." Thus it is said. The nature of wisdom is non-conceptual. As it says in the same text: "Wisdom is not conceptualization." Thus it is said. Fifth, regarding the location, there are two aspects. The location of mind is the ālaya-vijñāna, and the location of wisdom is the dharmakāya. In the *Klong Drug Pa* it says: "O great bodhisattva, the location of mind is the ālaya-vijñāna. Why is that? Because the ālaya-vijñāna gathers all objects of thought and is known as mind. The location of wisdom is the dharmakāya. Why is that? Because the dharmakāya does not possess any memory or conceptualization, and there is no awareness that grasps objects and subjects as different." Thus it is said. Therefore, mind is like a cloud that obscures wisdom, and wisdom is like the sun. The two do not have the same location. Since the obscured and the obscurer reside in different places, when one understands that mind and the appearance of mind are mistaken, one realizes that external appearing objects and the mind that grasps them are adventitious and without foundation. And when one understands that wisdom and the appearance of wisdom are not mistaken, one gains control over awareness in the mandala of the dharmakāya. Therefore, mind and wisdom should be distinguished. If they are not distinguished, wisdom will be obscured by mind, and one will not be able to see the self-nature of union, which is a fault. As it says in the same text: "O great bodhisattva, if one does not distinguish the self-nature of mind and wisdom, it is like the sun being obscured by a mass of clouds, and one will not be able to accomplish the meaning of external appearances." Therefore, yogis who are skilled in mind realize that external objects are without self. Yogis who are skilled in wisdom gain control over the wisdom of awareness itself. Thus it is said. The second meaning is to explain the specific characteristics of each. There are two aspects: explaining the difficulty of understanding the location of mind, and explaining the difficulty of understanding the location of wisdom. The first has two aspects: a common detailed distinction and a specific determination of location. The first has three aspects: nature, definition, and division. The nature of mind is the six realms of existence.

Having distinct consciousnesses, self-arising without grasping or apprehension, clinging to appearances as self through pervasive conceptualization, and with memories and thoughts arising in one's own continuum. As the Madhyamakavatara states: "Mind is called delusion, its essence enters and pervades, it is the basis of memories and thoughts." Also, as the Simhavikridita Sutra states: "The mind gathers various imprints." And as the Klong Drugpa states: "In short, all phenomena of samsara are the mind that grasps its own characteristics, that is, all the self-arising appearances of the six classes of beings." It is also named 'mind' because it grasps appearances as mind, whether they appear or not. That appearances are not desired to be mind has already been explained. The etymology is that it is called 'mind' because it thinks about objects. Thinking about coarse objects with conceptualization, and in the subtle realm without conceptualization, merely abiding in that state without grasping anything, is called 'mind.' As the Madhyamakavatara states: "Etymology arises from thinking about the object of memory, on what does one think and by what does one think, what is thought and why does one think?" There are two divisions: division into self-nature and division into aggregates of consciousness. The first is divided into pure and impure minds. The pure mind is the wisdom that is not produced by coarse deluded conceptualization, abiding in its own ground. These are the four dhyanas, the four formless absorptions, and the appearance of the mind of single-pointed quiescence in the desire realm, totaling nine. The impure mind is all the various pervasive conceptualizations and the minds associated with experiencing feelings, that is, all the objects following the yoga of dhyana and the formless realms. As the Madhyamakavatara states: "The divisions are pure and impure." Thus. The second, the division into aggregates of consciousness, is eight: the alaya-vijnana, the mind that is clear, non-conceptual, and neutral, like the surface of a mirror; the eye consciousness that does not conceptualize forms; and the ear, nose, tongue, and body consciousnesses that do not conceptualize their respective objects, like images already appearing in a mirror. The mind (manas) engages in the objects of the sense faculties that have become manifest from the conceptualizing aspect of its own objects, various phenomena, and the manner of apprehending them, or in the absence of objects of general conceptualization, like the clear appearance of Vajrasana (Bodh Gaya). At the time of conceptualization, the first consciousness that arises as apprehended is the mind consciousness. After that, the arising of acting in any of the forms of attachment, aversion, or neutrality is the grasping.
