The ignorance that relies on the part of awareness from where it arises is the first basis of all phenomena of samsara, and the alaya-consciousness that combines meanings, the basis of the part of karma, which individually combines and projects karma in samsara and nirvana, is the root support, which is unindicated. The alaya-consciousness of various habitual tendencies, the various karmas of the part that generates the cycle of mind and mental factors, is the latent part, which is unindicated. The alaya-consciousness of the habitual body, the coarse body that appears as limbs and subtle parts of particles, and the pure light body, and the basis of the three bodies that appear separately as if in samadhi, is the part that has the support of ignorance. As it says in the *Madhyamakavatara*: "Dividing, there are body and combination, various and the original basis." Some consider that the alaya-consciousness is designated from the tainted part of awareness, but because there is the fault of mixing with dharma, it is reasonable to designate it only as habitual tendencies. These are also just that the essence is the knowledge of ignorance, unindicated, and the habitual tendencies are only different in terms of reversal on one interval. That is, because it becomes the alaya-consciousness as the basis of the habitual body, the key to appearing as the body now lies in this. Because it becomes the alaya-consciousness as the basis of the habitual mind, it now appears as a collection of many consciousnesses, along with mental factors. Because it becomes the alaya-consciousness as the basis of various habitual tendencies, it now appears as various different appearances and radiance. Because it becomes the alaya-consciousness as the original basis, it now corresponds to ignorance in everything. These four alaya-consciousnesses are latent parts, which are unindicated, so like seeds underground, they are not actually visible. They are only the cause of manifest phenomena, and the four ignorances of body, mind, and appearance, like sprouts, arise from the key point that can actually be seen. All of these gather into one called alaya-consciousness, which is established as the same essence, and the four divisions are established in reliance on different reversals. The function is to act as the support of past and future habitual tendencies, to act as the cause of karma and afflictions, to act as the plan for the body and many collections, and to act as the part that combines the body, mind, and samsara and nirvana separately. As it says in the *String of Pearls*: "The alaya-consciousness itself is the cause of accumulation." The reason for naming is: as the connection of past and future habitual tendencies, and the connection of past and future maturation, and the support of the power of cause and effect, black and white separately.

Because you call it "all." Because it is a place of gathering together, it is called "basis." As the Madhyamakāvatāra says, "In that Ālaya, briefly explain, the basis of all that is Dharma and non-Dharma." Also, as the commentary on the Ratnagotravibhāga says, "Ālaya is the basis of all, it is also the basis of complete purification." Then, it is reasonable as the basis of samsara, how can it be the basis of purification? Generally, the basis has a real basis, such as the sun. There is also the basis of combination with it, such as virtue becoming the basis of rebirth in higher realms. Here, it is named as the basis of combination, that is, the virtue of the part of liberation that tends towards nirvana, which is accumulated through the three doors, exists on top of the Ālaya. The karma of the part of liberation, for the part of nirvana, acts as a cause to eliminate the obscuring defilements, so it is named as the cause of nirvana, but it is not considered as the cause and effect relationship between the arising and the arisen. Because the nature of nirvana is unconditioned, it is contradictory to newly produce it through causes and conditions. As the Ratnagotravibhāga says, "Unconditioned and spontaneously accomplished, not realized by other conditions, possessing knowledge, love, and power, possessing two benefits, it is the Buddha." Therefore, on the basis of understanding the place of Ālaya and the Dharmakāya, because of confusing the same similarities, thinking that "the defiled awareness and the undefiled Ālaya are the Dharmakāya," this is because of confusion and not distinguishing. Because one does not understand the difference in meaning between the same essence and different entities, even if one separates them with words, it is useless. As the Klong Drug Pa says, "Therefore, if one cannot distinguish between Ālaya and Dharmakāya, it is like having different perceptions of two objects, and one cannot manifest their respective meanings." These two are places where mistakes are easily made, so it is very important to distinguish their differences. Second, explaining the differences of the Dharmakāya, divided into five aspects: essence, definition, classification, function, and reason for naming. The essence of the Dharmakāya is the awareness that is not defiled by samsara, like the sky. As the Madhyamakāvatāra says, "The Dharmakāya is free from elaboration, without the characteristics of self-grasping, the essence is emptiness and clarity, indivisible." Also, as the Mu Tig Phreng Ba says, "The Dharmakāya is exhausted of outflows, empty and clear, clear and pervasive, not defiled by thought, memory is clear, the nature of being free from elaboration, pervasive and empty like the sky."
