If one asks the Hearers and Solitary Realizers what the characteristic of "self" is, some will say that the grasping at self and the so-called characteristic of "self" is about the size of a thumb. Some will say it is about the size of a millet grain. Some will say it is about the size of a sesame seed. Some will say that the characteristic of "self" dwells in the mind, burning and shining like the sun. Thus, various individuals do not understand the characteristic of the so-called "self," just as fools do not know a good sword. Bodhisattvas explain the characteristic of the so-called "self," but foolish people do not understand, so they divide it into various distinctions and cling to the characteristic of the so-called "self," which is like if one asks what the shape of a sword is, they will say it is like a horn. Thus, inferior fools constantly generate evil views. In order to cut off such evil views, the Thus-Gone One taught non-self, which is like a king saying to his ministers, "There is no such sword in my treasury." Son of good family, what the Thus-Gone One taught as "self" is called Buddha-nature. Therefore, that Buddha-nature is like a very clear and pure sword in the Dharma taught by the Buddha. Third, generating joy with special certainty has three aspects: If not taught by a true spiritual friend, it cannot be seen, and it is appropriate to rejoice even in obtaining it from the supreme lama. If even a Bodhisattva abiding on the ground finds it difficult to realize, what need is there to mention those who are still coming here? Because the secret of the Buddhas alone is the vajra realm, one should also generate joy. If taught by a true lama, it is directly seen, and naturally, self-appearance manifests in the bardo, one should also know that joy is generated. The first is: Again, in that same sutra, it says: Son of good family, all sentient beings are the same; because they have not attended to and revered a spiritual friend, even though they have Buddha-nature, they are unable to see it. The second is, in the Noble Nirvana Sutra, it says: Son of good family, for example
