If a treasure is hidden in the ground, That person does not know it, and the treasure does not say, "I am here" to proclaim it. Likewise, a precious treasure is contained within the mind, The stainless purification and the unestablished Dharma-nature as well, If not realized, the suffering of poverty, Is constantly experienced by all beings. Such are the nine similes and nine meanings, and in the Avatamsaka Sutra, with the simile of the three thousand great thousand worlds like silk, and many other metaphors, it is said that the essence of the Sugata is present in the minds of sentient beings. Second, dispelling doubts about this has three parts: establishing doubt, dispelling that doubt, and generating joy with special conviction. The first is: those who have not created roots of virtue in the past, and who have not met a true spiritual friend now, and who have not heard the profound Dharma of definite meaning, say: the nature of mind, emptiness, is called Buddha-nature or Tathagatagarbha, but how could there be qualities such as marks, examples, powers, etc.? The nature of reality is selfless, like empty space, as stated in all the Prajnaparamita Sutras, etc., therefore the sutras that teach the Tathagatagarbha are of provisional meaning. If it is not like that, then it is no different from the eternal self of the Tirthikas, and it seems to turn its back on the Dharma of definite meaning. The second is: such a way is not good, so for the time being, relying on scripture as a measure, dispelling it: why did the Blessed One speak in the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma, and you do not know that this place is said to be the last wheel of Dharma of ultimate and definite meaning? If only emptiness is the ultimate meaning, then how is it reasonable to show differences in the three wheels of Dharma? Therefore, emptiness is said to be of provisional meaning, and that is also intended to make those who are afraid of the nature of reality, and to prevent beginners from grasping at self. As in the category of Dharma of the Great Nirvana Sutra, first giving the example of a mother bear licking her cub and saying: son of the lineage, the Tathagata is also like that, in order to liberate all sentient beings, he shows the diligence of selflessness to all sentient beings, and because of diligence in that, the thought called self does not exist, and Nirvana is attained. Also, in order to dispel the evil view of seeing the world as repulsive, in order to show that it has transcended the repulsive Dharma of the world.

Furthermore, in order to show that those worldly Tirthikas who cling to the view of self are incorrect, by meditating on the Dharma of non-self, one will be transformed into a completely pure body. Just as a woman smears her breasts with bile for the sake of her child, so too is the Tathagata, who, in order to meditate on emptiness, declares that all dharmas are without self. Just as a woman squeezes out her breasts and calls her child to suckle, so too is my teaching of the Tathagatagarbha. Bhikshu, do not be afraid, just as a mother calls her child and lets him slowly suckle, so too, Bhikshu, should you discern well. The Tathagatagarbha is not something to be eliminated. Previously, when expounding the Prajnaparamita Sutra, my saying that all dharmas are emptiness was spoken in order to guide children away from clinging to self, but in reality, the sole Tathagatagarbha is the ultimate truth. It is not the same as the self contemplated by the Tirthikas, for the essence is primordially luminous and, although dwelling in the body, transcends permanence and impermanence, and therefore is not regarded as merely permanent. The luminosity can be seen through the guru's oral instructions, and therefore is not regarded as a hidden thing that no one can see. Its nature is emptiness and clarity, free from extremes, and therefore it is not associated with things like the thumb and their own characteristics and dharmas. Since there are no things and no characteristics, the size of the body is not considered to be related to the size, goodness, or badness of the essence, and so on, there are very many differences. The way the Tirthikas speak is completely different from the Tathagatagarbha of the Buddha, but only the name or the expression of the words is similar, and you foolish people think that we are foolish, which is like when a king lost his sword, a poor man dreamed of a sword in his dream, and after waking up, he babbled and fought for the sword, because he only saw the name and did not see the substance, so he was considered not to have seen the sword. Again, as it says in the same sutra, foolish people all say that everything has a self, which is like a poor man sleeping in someone else's house, babbling in his dream, saying sword, sword. Listen.
