Among the two ways of generating devotion, the first is that the samaya (vows) of secret mantra must be protected by both the master and the disciple. Therefore, disrespect and disputes, etc., should be avoided. Because the teacher who imparts the samaya is the master, and the disciple is the vessel. As it says in 'Self-Emergence': 'Master and disciple, are always known as the cause of protection. The cause of protection is the master, the one who protects is the disciple. Practice should follow that.' Therefore, they must generate love and compassion for each other. As it says in the same text: 'The thread of compassion is never cut, the thread of love is never broken, this is the relationship of master and disciple.' The master looks with compassion, and the disciple generates love; these two are the most important connections, so it should be done that way. The second is examining the vessel. As it says in the same text: 'The meaning of the Great Perfection, should not be poured into a bad vessel. The essence of those with faith, if poured into a bad vessel, both the essence and the vessel are ruined. Therefore, keep it secret from those of inferior intelligence.' The third is how to rely on the lama, along with the benefits. This is divided into how to rely and the benefits. First, as it says in 'Thal Gyur': 'Root and branch, both lamas, possessing their individual qualities, rely on them with kingdom and one's own body, retinue and enjoyments. With body, speech, and mind pleasing, rely on the lama as inseparable from the Buddha.' And as it says in 'Self-Emergence': 'To the master with those instructions, rely with one's own body and precious substances, and very rare things.' And as it says in 'Vajrasattva Heart Mirror': 'The king of secret mantras, Vajra Ali Ka, offer body and qualities and rely with great respect.' Regarding the benefits, 'Thal Gyur' says: 'The qualities from relying on that, are like a wish-fulfilling tree and a wish-fulfilling jewel, like a wish-granting cow, immeasurable qualities are obtained. Focus on that and rely on the lama, in order to turn away from the battle of samsara.' Second, विशेष (Tibetan: ཁྱད་པར།, Sanskrit Devanagari: viśeṣa, Sanskrit Romanization: vishesha, Chinese literal meaning: special) explaining the special vessel in detail, there are three points: Generally speaking, it is the vessel for teaching the Great Perfection; explaining in detail who holds the vessel; and praising the vessel that holds the teachings as unsurpassed. The first point, as it says in 'Adornment of Jewels': 'The great secret mandala, not to everyone

It should not be shown to people, but should be shown to those who can keep secrets. The excellence of secret mantras is that the types of manifestation are as follows: entrusting secrets to those who can keep them, being diligent in the meaning of secrets, being intelligent and wise, and having vows and precepts. So it is said. Secondly, in the Uttaratantra, it says: Those who hold views, meditation, and practice are those who are initially in the middle and diligent, able to give and respect the Guru (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, meaning: teacher), have asceticism and fear sin. Hold it with immutable and firm determination. Alternatively, be patient and slow, relaxed, foolish, and lazy, with little thought and slow nature, with quiet body, speech, and actions, and with wisdom, one will be able to hold it. So it is said. Thirdly, in the Jewel-Adorned Array, it says: The definitive meaning of mantras is taught to people of great distinction, such as those of royal lineage, Brahmin lineage, and great elder lineage. Alternatively, observe skin color without distinction of caste. Either male or female, whoever has this skin color is said to be a vessel for the Great Perfection. Limbs are coarse and skin color is black. Teeth are of good quality and white. Eye veins are slightly red, and the characteristics of the hair are also excellent, spiraling to the right and dark brown. Not valuing the body, external behavior is ordinary, tone is strong, or the expression of tone is as others say, and the person also speaks in the same way. The oral instructions of the Great Perfection are taught. If these are all present in one person, whether of butcher lineage or prostitute lineage, sweeper or beggar lineage, whatever evil lineage, whoever it may be, entrust this essence of secret instructions. If there are few resources, one should also prepare resources oneself and give them completely without reservation. These three essential secret instructions, the method of observing lineage and skin color, after my passing into Nirvana, this essence of secret instructions, the king of certainty is taught in this way. The above oral instructions should be shown to the person who possesses these qualities. So it is said. The second common meaning is that there are four stages of ripening empowerment: the benefits of empowerment, the faults of not being empowered, how to empower, and the order of vows of friends. The first is from Rangshar: The specific qualities are as follows: In the great light of wisdom, without obstruction.
