Therefore, that is not possible to know. This is clearly stated. The wisdom being mind has been negated. In short, if one speaks like that, it is like placing a herd of cows in one direction, and it cannot be overturned by scripture and reasoning. As Dharmakirti said in the Pramāṇavārttika, "Because the wrong path is endless, it is not necessary to elaborate on it here." Third, the way to be instructed to know: Therefore, intelligent individuals should know the difference between mind and wisdom. As it is said in the Garland of Pearls, "Mind arises from aggregation, and is both defiled and stained. The alaya-mind and so on, because they belong to the category of defilements, therefore, wise people should know the difference between mind and wisdom." Fourth, regarding the nature of these two, there are two aspects: The nature of mind is to establish the appearance of delusion, which has the form of the three realms. As it is said in the Tattvasaṃgraha, "What is called mind refers to deluded thoughts." The nature of wisdom is non-conceptual, as it is said in the same treatise, "Wisdom is not conceptual." Fifth, regarding the place, there are two aspects: The place of mind is the alaya-mind, and the place of wisdom is the dharmakaya. As it is said in the Klong Drug Pa, "Hey! Great Bodhisattva, the place of mind is the alaya-mind. Why is that? Because the alaya-mind gathers all objects of thought and is known as mind. The place of wisdom is the dharmakaya. Why is that? Because the dharmakaya does not possess all thoughts and concepts, and there is no knowledge that grasps objects as distinct." In this way, mind is like a cloud that obscures wisdom, and wisdom is like the sun, and there is no common ground between the two. Because what is obscured and what obscures are different. When one realizes that mind and the appearance of mind are mistaken, one understands that external appearing objects and the mind that grasps them are temporary and without foundation. When one realizes that wisdom and the appearance of wisdom are not mistaken, awareness gains control over the mandala of the dharmakaya. Therefore, mind and wisdom should be distinguished. If they are not distinguished, wisdom will be obscured by mind, and the self-nature of union will not be able to appear, and there will be such a fault. As it is said in the same treatise, "Hey! Great Bodhisattva, if the self-nature of mind and wisdom is not distinguished, it is like the sun being obscured by a mass of clouds, and it will not be able to accomplish the meaning of external appearances. Therefore,

Yogis skilled in mind realize the absence of self in external objects. Yogis skilled in wisdom master the wisdom of awareness itself. The second meaning is to separately explain the individual nature of each, which is divided into two points: separately explaining the difficulty in understanding the place of mind, and separately explaining the difficulty in understanding the place of wisdom. The first point is further divided into a common detailed distinction and a special determination of the place. The first part is further divided into essence, definition, and classification. The essence of mind is the consciousness of the six distinct realms of beings, each unconstrained by grasping, appearing through pervasive conceptualization, and clinging to appearances as self, along with the arising of memory and thought in one's own continuum. As the *Transcendent Treatise* states: "What is called mind is in confused conceptualization, its essence pervades and encompasses, the basis of all memory and thought." Also, as the *Lion's Perfect Strength* states: "The mind accumulates various imprints." Also, as the *Six Spaces* states: "In short, all the phenomena of samsara are minds that grasp their own characteristics, that is, all the appearances of the six realms of beings." This is because the mind holds onto appearances whether they appear or not, so appearances are named mind. The non-acceptance of appearances as mind has already been discussed. The definition is that it is called mind because it thinks about objects. Thinking about coarse objects with conceptualization, and with subtle objects without conceptualization, simply not clinging to anything, abiding in that state, is called mind. The *Transcendent Treatise* states: "Definition creates the object of memory through thought. On what does the mind dwell, and with what does it dwell? What is thought, and for what is it thought?" There are two classifications: dividing into self-nature and non-self-nature, and dividing into the collection of eight consciousnesses. The first is divided into pure and impure minds. The pure mind is the wisdom that is not produced by coarse confused conceptualization, the non-conceptual mind abiding in its own place, that is, the four dhyanas, the four formless absorptions, and the appearance of the mind of single-pointed quiescence in the desire realm, totaling nine. The impure mind is all the various pervasive conceptualizations, and all those with feeling and associated minds, and all those with objects following the yoga of the form and formless dhyanas. As the *Transcendent Treatise* states: "The classification is pure and impure." The second is divided into the collection of eight consciousnesses, that is, the mind of the alaya-consciousness, clear and non-conceptual, unlabelled, like a mirror.
