It is the basis for all habitual tendencies, namely, the ground of ignorance, which is neutral. The *Madhyamakāvatāra* states: "The container of the essence of habitual tendencies." The *Rangshar* states: "The ālaya is deceived by various kinds of knowledge from the grasping of conceptual thoughts. The ālaya is an object of ignorance." The definition is: It is the basis of many habitual tendencies, hence it is called ālaya. The *Madhyamakāvatāra* states: "The definition is that all are gathered together, the basis is assembled and accumulated." There are four divisions: The ālaya of the essential meaning is the ignorance that arises together with awareness from the very beginning, like gold and tarnish, in relation to awareness. It is the first basis of all phenomena of samsara. The ālaya of the meaning of action is the basis of the part of karma, which is the root support that combines and projects karma and each separately in samsara and nirvana, and has a neutral character. The ālaya of various habitual tendencies is the karma of the part that generates the cycle of mind and mental factors, and the part of various habitual tendencies that are latent, and has a neutral character. The ālaya of the habitual body is the basis of the part of ignorance that appears separately as the gross body that appears as limbs and subtle parts, the clear light body, and the body that appears as samadhi. The *Madhyamakāvatāra* states: "The divisions are body, action, variety, and original basis." Some assert that the ālaya is designated from the perspective of the aspect of awareness, things, and defilements. This has the fault of mixing with dharma, so it is reasonable to establish it only as habitual tendencies. These are also the essence of the ignorance of consciousness, neutral, and only a single interval between habitual tendencies, with different counter-aspects. That is, the basis of habitual tendencies in the body becomes the ālaya, so the key to appearing as the body now lies in this. The basis of habitual tendencies in the mind becomes the ālaya, so now it appears as a collection of various consciousnesses, along with mental factors. The basis of various habitual tendencies becomes the ālaya, so now it appears as various different appearances and radiance. The original basis becomes the ālaya, so now it is in accordance with ignorance in everything. These four ālaya are latent parts, neutral, and like seeds under the ground, they cannot actually be seen. They are only the cause of manifest phenomena, and the four ignorances of body, mind, and appearance are like sprouts, which can actually be seen, and the key lies in this.

To gather the Alaya-consciousness into one is to establish it on the basis of the same essence. The four distinctions are established in relation to different aspects. Its function is to serve as the basis for past and future imprints, as the cause of actions and afflictions, as the blueprint for the body and many assemblies, and as the means of connecting body and mind, and samsara and nirvana respectively. As stated in the "Garland of Pearls": "The Alaya-consciousness itself is for the sake of accumulation." The reason for this designation is that it is the connecting point of past and future imprints, the connection of past and future ripening results, and the basis for the power of good and bad deeds respectively, hence it is called "all"; it is the place where things gather together, hence it is called "basis." As stated in the "Root Wisdom Treatise": "Thereupon, the Alaya is briefly explained, it is the basis of all that is Dharma and non-Dharma." And as stated in the commentary on the "Ratnagotravibhāga": "The Alaya is the basis of all, and it is also the basis of complete purification." If it is reasonable to be the basis of samsara, then how can it be the basis of purification? Generally speaking, a basis is called a real basis, like the sun; and a related basis, like virtuous deeds being the basis of higher realms. But here, it is named as a related basis, that is, the virtuous deeds of liberation that are related to nirvana, which are accumulated through the three doors on top of the Alaya-consciousness. The actions of the liberation part, for the part of nirvana, serve as the cause of removing the obscuring stains, hence it is named as the cause of nirvana, but it is not considered as the cause and effect of what arises and what is caused to arise, because the nature of nirvana is unconditioned, so it contradicts being newly created by causes and conditions. As stated in the "Ratnagotravibhāga": "Unconditioned and spontaneously accomplished, not realized by other conditions, endowed with knowledge, love, and power, possessing two benefits, it is the Buddha." Therefore, if one knows the place of the Alaya-consciousness and the Dharmakaya, and mistakenly believes that the similar basis is the same, thinking that "the consciousness with defilements, the Alaya-consciousness without defilements is the Dharmakaya," this is because of confusion and not distinguishing. Because one does not understand the difference in meaning between the same essence and different aspects, even if one distinguishes with words, it is useless. As stated in the "Klong Drug Pa": "Therefore, if the Alaya-consciousness and the Dharmakaya are not distinguished, it is like holding two objects as different, and one cannot manifest their respective meanings." These two are places where mistakes are easily made, so one must distinguish.
