There are two ways in which error arises: generally speaking about the way error arises, and extensively explaining the specific categories of how the body is formed. The first is divided into briefly stating the essence and extensively explaining the nature. The first is: Error arises from not recognizing the basis appearance itself. In the Madhyamaka-prasangika it says: "By not knowing one, in the primordially pure (ka dag, Sanskrit: adi buddha, Roman: ādi buddha, original Buddha), by not knowing the nature itself, one grasps as the cause. The support of the object is color, due to the subtle causes and conditions of the two, it becomes the object of cyclic existence." Thus it is said. If asked how it arises, when it arises as the basis appearance, the power of compassion, awareness, clarity, and the ability to examine objects arise spontaneously. Depending on not recognizing this itself, it arises in accordance with the three kinds of ignorance. The ignorance that is the single cause, arising in awareness, is not recognized at that very moment. Co-emergent ignorance, not recognizing itself, and that awareness arise together. Conceptual ignorance, the aspect of examining one's own appearance as something else, these three. These three, on one awareness, have different opposites, but the essence is the same. When it examines its own appearance, it does not recognize the three aspects of the basis: essence, nature, and compassion, and the spontaneous manifestation of the basis appearance, appearing as the nature of the basis and the basis appearance, but grasps it as something else. Because of this difference, error arises. Moreover, from the aspect of the three kinds of ignorance as the cause, the four conditions, and the impure object, when awareness mistakenly grasps appearance as the grasper and the grasped, the grasping of the six consciousnesses arises without ceasing. Therefore, the six afflictions arise in a latent manner, thus binding awareness, and error arises in the appearance of the six objects. In the "Lamp Illuminating" it says: "In that basis abiding in such a way, the cause and seed of error are, the clear part is lost outwards, awareness is clear, clear, and distinct. Ignorance is of three kinds, mind slightly turns outwards to the appearance part, with the mind grasping the object as self, for the basis and the appearance part of the basis, error lies in distinguishing the basis and the awareness of the basis. From the cause of error, encountering the condition of the object, due to the four conditions, the object is impure, the clear part of various appearances ceases. Because the grasping of the six consciousnesses does not cease, the six afflictions bind the self, the six objects appear separately. Thus, grasping the object as self." Thus it is said. The six objects are form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena. The six afflictions are igno-

And also desire, hatred, ignorance, pride, and jealousy. Among these, ignorance pervades all five poisons, and ignorance is one of the five poisons, therefore they are explained separately. If ignorance is differentiated, then the three aspects of the cause have been explained, and the six aspects of the essence are: As it says in "Self-Arisen": Ignorance is like this: the root is the ignorance of the mind, delusion is the ignorance of the object, the basis of delusion is the ignorance of the ground, grasping is the ignorance of conceptual thought, fabrication is the ignorance of the path, and not knowing is the ignorance of bewilderment. Thus, six types of ignorance arise, and one does not see one's own appearance. These are also explained separately because six types of bewilderment arise in each of their respective aspects. The six minds are: Again, from this arise the six grasping minds. The mind that is similarly associated with ignorance, the mind of the consciousness of mind, the mind that seeks everywhere, the mind that determines, the mind that is very coarse, and the mind that establishes definitively. These are also, in order: having mental movement, self-knowing through consciousness, grasping objects, definitively grasping objects, being distracted by objects, coarse afflictions, and inwardly focusing on one object, which are the bewilderment of the six aspects. Second, the nature is explained in detail, divided into two: the manner of delusion, the aspect of essence, and the appearance, the aspect of conditions, are explained in detail. The first is that the common basis of delusion, when appearing, is that the stain of not knowing one's own face by awareness causes awareness itself to be defiled by delusion, so that as the knowable, awareness itself, which is originally without stain, also becomes stained, and is enveloped in the realm of mind, and the essence, the originally pure awareness, is defiled by conceptual thought, and is bound by the six minds, so that the body is trapped in the net of indivisible particles, and the luminosity becomes dull. That is, because it is not understood that the basic appearance arises from itself, it is the condition of the cause. Because it appears as an object, it is the condition of the object. Because of grasping at self and what belongs to self, it is the condition of the owner. Because these three exist simultaneously, it is the immediately preceding condition, these four are delusions. As it says in "String of Pearls": It is called the common basis of delusion. Because it is defiled by ignorance itself. The knowable itself also appears as a stain. Because memories and thoughts arise in the mind. The essence itself is defiled by conceptual thought. Because the grasping of the six minds does not cease. The Dharmakaya itself is also bound by what is grasped. Because it is connected to indivisible particles. Luminosity
