Just as after examining the foundation, building on a solid place, and then entering the room at any time without hesitation, entering immediately, so too, the yogi cuts off the additions and subtractions through hearing and thinking. The second case is that, like that metaphor, first cutting off the mental additions and subtractions through hearing and thinking, and then when meditating, not doubting the meaning being meditated upon, thereby meditating directly hitting the mark. This is also done by first studying the extremes of inherent existence and the various categories of vehicles through hearing and thinking, thereby cutting off all mental proliferation. In general, whatever is to be practiced, merely hearing is sufficient, but for those who have awakened their karma from previous lives, and in the past good kalpa, when the lamas were all great accomplished ones, their own karmic connections, the lama's compassion and clairvoyance, and the dharma that is appropriate for them, liberation is possible by relying on only one dharma that they have a connection with. However, in this present time, good karmic connections are also difficult to obtain, and because there are many conceptualizations, the possibility of cutting off with just one proliferation is only barely excluded. Most people need to practice hearing and thinking without bias. Now is the end of the Nyingtik teachings, the time to reach what is called "the place of practice with faith and desire." In particular, this Secret King is the pinnacle of all teachings, so if one is not vast in hearing and thinking, has superior wisdom, and possesses excellent fortune, it is impossible to understand its meaning. Therefore, entering this vehicle requires relying on great hearing and thinking. In the Ornament of Clear Realization, it says: The various stages of verbal expression of philosophical tenets, the nine stages are pondered by the mind, for those who are far from the points of clear realization, future beings to be tamed and those with coarse conceptual minds, because they act on words, they are not matured. The end of this teaching, is called the place of practice with faith and desire. Transcending words, proliferation is completely perfect, this secret definitive tantra, relying on the path of clear realization, the union of self-awareness and rigpa. All Buddhas gathered into one, the nature of self-knowing certainty, practice equality without mixing, that is the stage of transcending words. So it is said. If someone thinks that this contradicts what is said about the faculties not having sharpness or dullness, that is because of the awakening of karma from previous lives. In this life, if one hears this dharma from a qualified lama, one can cut off proliferation at once, and instead of seeking many more profound dharmas than this, one concentrates one's practice solely on Tögal.

For those who cling to elaborate words and, even seeing Thod rgal, lack definite understanding, elaborate Dharma is needed. To be liberated from that, one must cut through the accretions of much hearing, so hearing and thinking are shown to be essential. To summarize, in this present time, uncommon faith in Thod rgal has arisen. If there is not even a speck of clinging to that of Khregs chod, then one is fortunate, and such people are rare. Merely with this faith, one can travel the path; merely striving in practice is sufficient. If this is not the case, and one takes the name of a lama who shows others, then one must necessarily have vast hearing and thinking, because one must know that one's own and others' paths are not mistaken. Especially the teacher must not mistake the path; if he does, then everything he teaches will go astray, so at first, vast hearing and thinking are precious. Thus, having cut through the accretions of what is to be known with external hearing and thinking, then internally, by meditating, abide in the state of Dharma-nature, and secretly, having stripped bare the self-awareness of the wisdom of the expanse, one should always strive to become accustomed to directly seeing the Dharmakaya. As it says in the "Union of Sun and Moon": Who sees the lamp of the expanse? They manifestly use the expanse of Dharma. Who sees the lamp of the bindu? They obtain the hope of those who strive. Who sees the lamp of wisdom? They realize the characteristics of the general and the individual. Who sees the lamp of water? They obtain mastery over the senses. Who is accustomed to the lineage of the channels? The awarenesses reach a balance. The fruit of that is the three kayas; these are self-awareness. In the intermediate state of abiding nature, these who are accustomed, all phenomena are self-liberated; there is no doubt about this. So it is. Second, to clarify what is unclear in the bardo of dying, the instructions are like a beautiful woman looking in a mirror, and there are two aspects: the common general nature, and the special supreme distinctions. The first has seven parts: the reasons for certainty of death, the method of examining death, the method of averting it, the appearances of dying, the yogi's instructions, the signs of birth of ordinary beings in the six realms, and the ritual for purifying them. First, from the moment of birth, death is certain, so one must strive only in the sacred Dharma. As it says in the "Heap of Jewels Sutra": The life of a stable person, has no fixed time, how strange! Six aggregates
