From the liberation of the Dharma, seeing nakedly and clearly, one believes in the Samadhi of spontaneous perfection, and the exhaustion of realization is completed. From the power of that clarity, like the appearance of an image in a mirror, the manifestation of appearances and mind, in whatever way, is unceasing, and by practicing the power of liberation in the groundless, indefinite space of one's own being, one becomes accustomed to the key point of non-abandonment and self-liberation. Having decided on traceless self-dissolution, one gains confidence in the innate wisdom of thorough penetration. The three nails of Dzogchen Kunjed Gyalpo, spontaneously perfected and vast, secure one's own ground. As it says in the *Destruction of All Elaborations*: "Furthermore, the essence of Dharmata is established as essence from its own nature. Because the manner of appearance is not fixed, the paths of entry are also different. From the entry, seeing, and habituation of essence, knowledge, and liberation-vision, recognizing essence is one's own essence, the culmination of faith. Decisiveness leads to confidence. Thus, through these three definitive actions, the cause is cut off by the completion of essence." So it is said. Now, it is taught that appearances arising as play from the power of energy are liberated from their own ground into the space of no-self: Appearing as form, appearance is liberated in its own place. Sounding as sound, sound is liberated in its own place. Smelling as scent, scent is liberated in the expanse. Tasting flavor, touching, liberated in that state of one's own being. Memory, awareness, arising sensations, liberated without root or basis. The appearances of the six objects are empty forms without substance, clear appearances, primordially liberated in the state of no-self. The six senses, together with consciousness, are empty in their own essence, and because they have never existed, they are liberated in the expanse of emptiness. Appearances and mind are without support, primordially liberated in the very nature of space, so that not even a particle exists as truly established in the nature of essence and object. Because it is merely a false appearance, but there is no false establishment either. Therefore, in the expanse of the great emptiness of ultimate liberation, the empty form of clear appearance, which does not exist, appears like the moon in water, arising without self-nature from the moment it appears. There is no need for acceptance or rejection, hope or doubt, or any investigation. As the noble Lha said: "Because of how it appears and its essence, investigation does not apply to this." As it is said. That is, how it appears is empty of essence, beyond truth and falsehood, and uncertain about various things, therefore it is emptiness itself. The uncertain various things are the clear appearance from the energy without cause or condition.

Appearances arise as interdependent events due to the collection of [causes and conditions]. These playful displays of illusion have a long-term cause: beginningless imprints present in the alaya-vijnana, stirred by karma and afflictions. The immediate cause is merely a sudden collection [of circumstances]. For example, perceiving Devadatta as an enemy: the long-term cause is karma and imprints; the immediate cause is a sudden feeling of displeasure, which results in the appearance of an enemy. The appearances of the environment and beings, along with happiness and suffering, arise suddenly from causes and conditions, and are therefore unreal empty forms. If they were real, they would have to arise independently of causes and conditions. Therefore, appearing in various forms is emptiness itself. As stated in the Madhyamakavatara: "Furthermore, the nature of phenomena is explained; since this nature is not singular, it appears according to how it is examined. Various names arise from the basis of imputation, and manifold expressions emerge. Since names are indefinite and various, their meaning is empty of inherent existence, being merely conceptual. Since emptiness is not established in anything, it appears as naturally pure." The noble Nagarjuna said: "Apart from dependent arising, there is no phenomenon whatsoever. Therefore, apart from emptiness, there is no phenomenon whatsoever." This is as it is taught. Some say that meditating on a deity brings accomplishments, and meditating on impermanence and so on brings corresponding results. If these are connected to newly arising phenomena, aren't those phenomena real? What is explained here is that it is precisely because they appear to be accomplished suddenly that they are unreal. Because they do not appear without meditation, they appear with meditation and so on. However, merely due to the increased power of conceptual thought, it may seem for a while that things change according to the object of observation and its causes and conditions, but the ultimate nature of reality does not change even by a hair's breadth. Just like a child's game, the appearance may seem to change for a moment, but in reality, it does not change; or like the appearance of a magic trick, it may seem to change for a while, but it will eventually disappear and is not permanent, so in reality, it does not change. Similarly, when things appear as delusion or non-delusion, it may seem for a while that the mind is changing, but in reality, the nature of reality does not change even by a single hair's breadth. Whatever appears arises as the play of emptiness. Again, some say that because things are seen and heard, emptiness is not reasonable. If one thinks that emptiness means nothing exists and focuses the mind only on what is invisible, that is nihilism.
