Just like being attached to women, if there is no time to meet with the state of understanding the nature of reality, it is comfortable to abandon the methods of effort. Without understanding that the empty forms that arise as play from the skill of penetrating awareness are merely clear appearances, some grasp appearances as their own mind, and some grasp them as other external things. Just as no leaves appear on a tree whose heartwood has dried up, the fruit is a meaningless effort, so it is comfortable to abandon all clinging to the idea that "this appearance is like this." In general, the appearance that arises as play from skill appears as pure when grasping is pure, and as confused when it is impure. From the time of appearance, it is merely play, and there is nothing inside or outside, and nothing is established, so it is an empty form without a basis, just a clear appearance. This has already been said before. Not understanding that the essence, nature, and compassion of awareness are the three kayas, the truth of ultimate reality, some believe that there is an empty void somewhere in the realm of ultimate truth. It is like an elephant returning to its own home, but not knowing that it is in the cave, instead cutting off its tracks and searching in all places, but not finding it. Therefore, it is comfortable to abandon the mind that seeks the ultimate nature. Not understanding that awareness is the exhaustion of phenomena, naked and bare, some grasp the empty forms of external appearances and the radiance of awareness as awareness. This does not free one from the bonds of grasping and being grasped. It is like a bird tied with silk thread that wants to fly but can only go as far as the thread allows. Therefore, it is comfortable to abandon seeking purification and liberation in light and appearance. Without understanding the meaning of settling in the place of awareness, self-liberation, one blocks off each aspect of the general concepts of emptiness, bliss, clarity, and non-action, and thinks, "I have realized the view," and claims to have realized it. It is like a worthless child with no originality who changes his clothes and pretends to be a king. Therefore, it is comfortable to abandon the view of intellectual speculation. As it says in the Root Verses [of the Middle Way], "For the sake of abandoning all views, what did you, Gautama, say?" It is like that. Relying on arrogance and intellectual speculation, one speaks boastfully, saying, "I have realized the view, it is non-action." This is a shameless statement because it is unrelated to the true meaning. Who but a foolish, ignorant, and darkened person would proclaim such a thing? It is the desire of those whose eyes of wisdom are closed and who have entered into many paths of wrong views. This perversion is the enemy of the sacred Dharma.

I am greatly blamed by the wise for contradicting (this principle). If the meaning of non-origination is truly realized, then the illusion of clinging to things will vanish, and there will be signs of the warmth of Dharma-nature in body and speech, such as non-attachment, fearlessness of death, radiance and youthfulness, absence of white hair and wrinkles, and so on. If there are none of these signs, yet one says, 'I have realized non-origination,' it is like the wind blowing in an empty valley. Therefore, it is better to abandon the boastful talk of non-realization and the clinging of conceptual mind. If one has not become thoroughly familiar with the meaning of the empty-clear continuous stream, in which the intrinsic face of awareness is naked, not established as an entity, and without cutting off the awareness, and claims that the illusion of samsara and the clinging to illusion will cease, it is like pointing a finger in the dark, which neither oneself nor others can see. Because the components of the illusion of grasping and the grasped cannot be eliminated, it is better to abandon the meditation of the mind with a target.
