Like hail, it is merely the self-appearance of emptiness without a basis. Afflictions, too, have never had an essence. There is no ground to rely on, no root from which they arise, so naturally, they go to liberation by themselves in a state of just letting go. When the essence of awareness is thoroughly recognized, all afflictions dissolve in their own place and are naturally liberated, just as when a peg holding a knot is pulled out, the rope naturally comes undone. If this is not understood, even if abandoned, they cannot be abandoned; like the body and its shadow, they always follow. Even if purified, they cannot be purified; like trying to whiten crystal by applying white to it, the object of purification and the means of purification are not different. Even if transformed, they cannot be transformed; like the color of jade that does not change, the mind cannot change the mind. Even if left to subside on their own, they cannot be subdued, because the one who lets go is none other than conceptual thought. They cannot be liberated by antidotes; like stirring muddy water with a stick in the hope of clearing it, the antidote itself is the same as what is to be abandoned. Afflictions themselves are not the nature of reality, because they are no different from the consciousness of ordinary fools, so they cannot transcend samsara. In the Union of Sun and Moon, it says: Are these afflictions to be abandoned? Are they to be purified? Are they to be transformed? Are they to be left to subside on their own? For each of these, are they to be subdued by individual antidotes? Are they to be placed in their own nature? Are they themselves the nature of reality? Are these to liberate themselves by themselves? The Teacher spoke thus. Then Vajradhara replied: Listen, great Sage! Listen! These words that I have taught abide in the minds of all beings. These bind them to samsara, obscuring great bliss. Therefore, these are not to be abandoned. If you do not realize them as they are, the yogi is like the body and its shadow. From that, it arises by itself, so abandonment is not abandonment. Likewise, it is not purification either. Transformation also cannot transform. Without realizing the unchanging essence, like a crystal rock or a jade stone, it is impossible to purify or transform. In the place that is naturally pure, the yogi can observe. Likewise, it is not pacification either. Without knowing manifest superior seeing, like Mount Meru, the king of mountains, no one can destroy it. It is not liberated by antidotes. Without seeking self-purification, like muddy water that becomes muddier the more you try to clear it, it never clears.

No. That very self is not also dharmata. Without knowing the spontaneous manifestation of self-appearance, like the appearance of ordinary fools, it is not the reversal of manifest clinging. Thus it is said. Therefore, other vehicles, even if they strive, cannot purify it. Here, it is purified in the expanse without abandoning the key point of realizing self-awareness as penetratingly clear. That is, it is liberated by meditating on the appearance of self-establishment with effort, and it is liberated by realizing the knowledge of effortless self-liberation as trekchö, penetratingly clear. However, knowledge does not liberate afflictions through penetrating clarity, but the afflictions themselves are liberated by themselves, like a snake's knot. The key to the liberation of afflictions themselves in arising and liberation lies in not forgetting the state of realizing knowledge as penetratingly clear, so although it seems like knowledge liberates afflictions, in reality it is not so. Again, from that very tantra: Alas, listen also, O Sage. These are two kinds of mental stages: those with effort and those without effort. Those with effort abide in their own place. Through the measure of familiarizing with appearances, the appearance of pure wisdom, when it arises spontaneously in all inner and outer things, is not born from that condition. As long as those things arise and change, they are liberated by abiding in their own place. Therefore, it is the appearance of a yogi. Those without effort are like this: self-liberation by oneself in oneself. Since self-nature is inherently self-liberated, like iron moving with iron, like stone breaking stones. One's own antidote is greater than oneself. By realizing the Great Perfection of self-nature, whatever familiarity there is like this, one finds the meanings by abiding without searching. By not meditating, great bliss increases. One directly knows in self-nature. This is who one meets. Even those who possess the five heinous sins are liberated by familiarizing with this. There is no doubt about this, know that. Thus it is said. The vajra of the sky without accepting or rejecting good or bad, all afflictions, karma, and habitual tendencies are a magical display arising as a play from potency. The path of liberation by doing good as an antidote is also a magical display arising as a play from potency. Since both arise as wisdom from the play of potency, the key is to recognize and abide without fabrication in that state. Pace is equal, gait is equal, and shaking from the ground is also equal. Since conditioned phenomena arise from causes and have not transcended cause and effect, it is important to cherish self-abiding and other-abiding, and the cycle of cause and effect. The various conceptual thoughts that should be abandoned arise, and the antidote of good thoughts that abandon them
