Eleventh: Commentary on the Chapter Showing that Conditioned Appearances are Pure Like Space. Eleventh: Commentary on the Chapter Showing that Conditioned Appearances are Pure Like Space. Thus, as an aid to showing the great essential nature of realization, from the precious instructions on the self-dissolving purity of conditioned appearances, the great thunderbolt of liberation upon encounter is: All is equal to space, the one bodhicitta. By grasping at duality, one is confused in cyclic existence as cause and effect. Confused appearances are rootless, illusory appearances. Encounters are without trace; maintain them free from calculation. In the place where object and awareness meet, recognize the awareness of self-nature, the original state. That, too, is as previously mentioned: either leave it alone, or gaze at it, or let it be in its natural state. Then the self-liberated dharmakaya's own state is nakedly realized. As it says in The String of Pearls: Immutable dharmata is utterly stable. Self-appearance is self-liberated, one's own realm. Self-nature is self-purified, one's own sound. Leave it alone, gaze at it, let it be. The thunderbolt that shows adverse conditions as training in the power of awareness is: Unwanted things fall on one's head; the mind that should be discarded—anger and displeasure, jealousy, strife and annoyance, weariness of mind, affliction, suffering, fear of death and birth, and so on—when they arise as a display from the power of awareness, recognize them. Do not reject them, do not remedy them, do not transform them, do not accept them, and do not look at them or meditate on them. In their natural state, rest all at once, spontaneously, free from focus and gathering in. The mind of traceless self-dissolution, the purity of space, clear and powerful, arises from within. When strong clinging arises—displeasure, anger, strife, hatred, and so on—do not reject it like the shravakas. Do not remedy it with antidotes like the bodhisattvas. Do not transform it into wisdom like the outer and inner mantras. Do not deliberately accept it like some schools of mind. Do not look at its face like some schools. Do not meditate on its state like some schools. At that time, recognize the awareness of the original state nakedly and clearly. Then displeasure dissolves on its own, and awareness arises clearly, transparently, and powerfully. As it says in A Heap of Jewels: When experiencing the suffering of beings, my own bliss arises. At that time, if there is no distinction between pleasure and pain, my qualities are perfected in this. So it is. Whatever appears is liberated upon encounter. Therefore, the thunderbolt that pacifies what is to be abandoned and the antidote at the ground is: Awareness without right or wrong, in an unbiased direction, appearances without attachment here, upon encounter.

Here, by resting in a state without grasping, here, the assertion and negation of liberation disappear without a trace. Experiences free from clinging and attachment burst forth from within. This very state, as it is, is the vast expanse of the mind from the very beginning. Whatever knowledge of affirmation and negation arises in the field of perception, do not look at it, do not meditate on the state, do not seek an intermediary. Merely recognizing the naked awareness is liberation into the nature of reality. That is, since there is no bondage from the beginning, it is labeled as liberation. By seeing the key point of nakedness, one is liberated into nakedness. By seeing the essence of original purity, one is liberated into original liberation. By directly abiding in self-settling, one is liberated in one's own place. By staring and dissolving at the place of appearance, one is liberated into staring liberation. There is nothing that is not liberated, because by realizing the groundlessness, one is liberated into complete liberation. Because liberation is born at the time of arising, one is liberated in an instant. Whatever arises as a condition, whatever appears, there is no harm to the yogi of the Great Perfection of naturalness, which comes from seeing the key point and repeating it without turning away from the nature of reality. As it says in Thal 'gyur: "Furthermore, the nature of liberation is explained. Because of liberation by key points, effort is exhausted. Because of liberation from the beginning, there is no need to repeat. Because it is self-liberation, there is no antidote. Because it is staring liberation, it disappears at the place of seeing. Because of complete liberation, the nature is pure. Because of liberation in time, there is no need to habituate. Because of natural liberation, it is uncorrected." So it is. The sky peg of great bliss self-liberation is to bind the mind directly and transparently, which is: The mind that desires in the same way and is happy in the mind, the pair of bliss, intimacy, sweet words, enjoyment, and places and directions that are pleasing to the mind, the mind arises adorned with natural joy. That itself is recognition, with a natural abiding posture, spontaneously accomplished in the primordial realm. When joy arises and vanishes depending on what, because it is the clarity of awareness, it remains unmoved from the state of recognizing the nakedness. As it says in the Heap of Jewels: "When the thoughts of the mind appear outward, my wisdom is self-purifying. If there is no following after this, my sounds are heard by this." So it is. The sky peg of the knowledge of gathering and scattering in its own place, liberated into the non-duality of reality, is: In its own nature, in between, going, staying, trembling, abiding. Whatever arises other than joy and displeasure, at the time of arising, recognize it, without abandoning or adopting, naturally abiding in the nature of reality, without distinction, is called ignorance liberated into great clear light. Joy and displeasure, two
