When awareness arises, the moment awareness meets with thoughts, they are rendered baseless. Regarding appearances, do not prohibit thoughts, do not cling, do not discriminate. Instead, recognize the naked awareness, openly and clearly, and maintain it without distraction. As it is said in the Khungchen: "The basis of all phenomena being primordially pure and completely liberated, effortlessly, without action, removing the obstacles of the mind, the cessation of the three encounters dwelling in the realm. Whatever arises, without distraction, subdue between the realm and the mind." Therefore, regarding appearances, when thoughts arise, in that very moment of arising, recognize the arising of awareness. This is extremely crucial, so keep it in mind and explain it in detail. Focusing on liberation, subduing in the great view of liberation, means the three—arising, abiding, and liberation—are continuous. Because it is continuous, there is no gap between cause and effect. Because there is no cause and effect, the cliff of samsara is cut off. Because there is no cliff, where is the wrong path? Here, because awareness is continuous, its power does not cease. When thoughts appear as if arising in the realm, either they arise, or they abide, or they are liberated. They do not go beyond these three ways of vanishing, like the continuous flow of a river. In an instant, there is no accumulation of cause and effect. Arising and vanishing occur simultaneously, like ripples on water. Abiding and the other two, arising and vanishing, are analyzed by observing the aspect of awareness with the mind. Arising and liberation sometimes occur simultaneously, realizing that cause and effect cannot exist, thus cutting off the cause of samsara. The result cannot be to revolve in the three realms and six paths, therefore the mind is at ease. There is no wrong path or obscuration in this key point, because it is pure in arising and liberation, so wrong paths and obscurations are cut off in the nature of phenomena, which is called cutting off the cliff of hope and fear. This is the subduing in practice. Whether mental appearances arise in the realm, or realm appearances arise in the mind, it is the same no matter what arises. In the moment of focusing on the place of arising, it naturally vanishes, without a trace, clear and transparent, this is inevitable. At that moment, abide in the state of vanishing, and recognize the clear and transparent state of awareness, then the pure part will be even more obvious and more certain. Others only meditate without thought in the state of vanishing, but I think that is the peaceful abiding part of awareness, not understanding the key point. No matter where, you must recognize the naked, clear, and open awareness, which should be regarded as a special characteristic of Dzogchen. The cessation of focusing on liberation, outwardly is the appearance of the realm, inwardly is the clear awareness.

In that interval of time, restraint is achieved through recognizing awareness. As it says in the Khungchen: "Cherdrol is self-purified, ultimate liberation is completely perfected. Whose edge is free, which two are self-illuminating, the great expanse of non-action, the great end that is not to be sought. Body, speech, non-action, restrained in the space of appearance and emptiness." Thus it is said. Ultimate liberation, the cessation of restraint on that which transcends thought and expression is: the unchanging expanse of Samantabhadra from the beginning, because there is no change, it is the expanse of Vajrasattva. Merely recognizing the natural state, this is simply named "Buddha." Because the essence of awareness is not established anywhere, it is Samantabhadra, because it is empty and clear, the vast expanse of Vajrasattva, recognizing this is called finding the Buddha within oneself. Searching elsewhere will not find it. As it says in the Illusion Sutra: "From any of the ten directions and four times, the perfect Buddha cannot be found. Mind itself is the perfect Buddha, do not seek the Buddha elsewhere." And as it says in the Noble Aka Yeshe: "Mind itself is the perfect Buddha, do not seek the Buddha elsewhere." Thus it is said. If you take this to heart, it is the same whether it arises or does not arise. Therefore, do not think outwards towards external objects, do not conceptualize inwards towards the mind, and do not settle in the unborn in between, but directly recognize the awareness as clear and transparent. Thus, without abandoning anything, the edge of freedom from elaboration and transcendence of thought and expression, which does not abide before the mind, abides in that instant in the view like the sky. Because there is no disturbance of thoughts, it is said that it does not abide before the mind. Because there is no conceptualization of the objects of appearance, it is said that there are no things or characteristics. When the objects of appearance and the scattered thoughts of knowing become non-dual, there is no other form of measuring samsara and nirvana and grasping and holding, therefore, one's own wisdom of awareness, which is beyond speech, thought, and expression, is called one's own awareness. As it says in the Garland of Pearls: "Because it is ultimate liberation, the four extremes cease." And as it also says in the Khungchen: "Self-abiding, dependence, and the actions of samsara and nirvana are non-action, one's own and others' appearances and the magic of awareness are also, because the obstacles of confused vision, attachment, and clinging are removed, the end of verbose speech ceases, the manifestation of whatever magic of mind and thought ceases, restrained between the mind free from phenomena and the actor." Thus it is said. This key point is the great path common to all the Buddhas who have gone and those who follow.
