As a means, various stages of contemplation are taught. In summary, all meditations are included in contemplation with support and without support. Contemplation with support is to hold the mind without distraction on any of the external appearing objects such as form, sound, smell, taste, touch, etc. For example, holding the mind on the deity's body, hand implements, trees, pebbles, etc. Contemplation without support is the object of the mind, which is to hold the mind on the various contemplations of the channels, winds, and bindus with appearance, desiring non-conceptualization. For example, contemplating letters, balls of light, chakras of the channels, the fire of tummo, etc., which is to hold the mind on the stages of mental activity. Without appearance is to be with the body in the lotus position, etc., directing the mind without any conceptualization and without any distraction. This is also the non-conceptual contemplation of emptiness and clarity. In general, contemplation is said to be included in two types: with conceptualization and without conceptualization. There, they are gathered together. In short, all desires are called meditation in the state of a single focus, its essence is mind abiding, its necessity is the hope for a result because it is stable, its function is the desire to stop grasping and being grasped. As it is said in the Consequence School: "Meditation is mind abiding, cutting off the inner and outer movements, grasping and being grasped cease." And again in the same: "Channels and winds and bindus, essential points of the body, contemplation and emptiness, meditation is what is desired." These are taken as the object of contemplation because of the desire to stop grasping and being grasped, and the mind goes to hold onto that, which is a means of entering into the profound Dharma, but it is not the yoga of profound reality. Meditation is a special Dharma of this Great Perfection, just as fire has heat as its inherent nature, or water has moisture as its natural state, awareness has its own natural meditation. Therefore, once awareness is recognized, it abides in its own natural meditation, so even if one does not deliberately practice, the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality will naturally arise. In the bardo, the arising of natural meditation is like the arising of what is naturally present in awareness. Here too, it is the same, once the mind becomes the path, the experience of meditating on mind abiding, if one makes effort it is there, if one lets go it is lost, that is the nature of Dharma. Once awareness becomes the path of wisdom, self-born meditation abides in a stream like a river, qualities naturally.

Therefore, that which is born remains inseparably at all times. Regarding this, the meditator grasps with a mind free from conceptualization, and the yogi directly recognizes awareness as naked and free from conceptualization. Although the two are similar in being free from conceptualization, if the mind, free from conceptualization, is placed in the posture of the body, etc., it will be destroyed and will not give rise to naked awareness. Awareness free from conceptualization is the opposite of this, so the difference is great. The mind practitioner purifies conceptualization with antidotes, so it seems that temporary conceptualizations have disappeared without a trace; the awareness seer lets conceptualization go like a horse freed from its reins. Although both seem to vanish like memory, thought, and attachment, the former, because the root has not been severed, clinging arises naturally, and the mind thinks that cessation arises from the unborn. But here, because there is no place to arise and no cause for arising, the root has been severed. The radiance of compassion is unceasing, manifesting like reflections appearing in a mirror. The other sees external appearances like rays emanating from the sun, so the difference is great. Furthermore, the mind abiding in its own natural state of calmness, and awareness abiding in its own natural state of ease, are similar in clarity and non-conceptualization. However, the mind has the stake of grasping and clinging, so there is clinging to the state of abiding. Awareness, on the other hand, is unobstructed without the slightest hindrance, so the difference is great. Furthermore, in the clarity of awareness, the appearance of objects does not cease the clarity, and the thoughts and memories that arise from the mind towards external objects are similar in that they are aware of objects. However, awareness does not follow after objects; although objects appear, awareness remains completely unobstructed, so the root of conceptualization is severed. The mind scatters towards external objects, and because the root has not been severed, there is a difference in the arising of conceptualization. As it says in the "Six Spaces": "The stainless self-mind, the non-conceptual self-awareness, are similar, similar, but a mistake. The unobstructed, deep, clear appearance, and the thoughts and attachments of beings, are similar, similar, but a mistake. The meditation of resting without searching, and the relaxation of the channels, winds, and mind, are similar, similar, but a mistake. The object appearance of mindless awareness, and the delusion of thoughts and the six realms, are similar, similar, but a mistake." In short, meditation focused on the mind with a target is the stake of grasping and clinging, while the contemplation of awareness abiding naturally is the wheel of the Dharma of natural abiding. Therefore, practicing the mind of the higher realms, which is the cause of creating samsara, and liberation
