The actual union with Nirvana has the distinction of abiding in the intention of the Buddhas. In the Root Verses, it says, "That which arises from the descent of self-nature, should be spoken of as pure contemplation." And again, "The unaltered, self-established nature of reality, how it does not change from that, is the intention of the Buddhas." Here, compared to the common path of meditation, this path of the Heart Essence is superior due to five distinctions: By realizing awareness nakedly, there is no dullness or sharpness in the faculties; by directly realizing transparently through one's own faculties, one does not rely on the wisdom of conceptual thought; by realizing awareness that transcends words transparently, one does not expect meaning from mental constructs and empty talk; whatever appears, one realizes as the path-appearance of the three kayas, merely good or bad illusions, so one does not hold the confidence of clinging to appearances; and by awareness being nakedly transparent, one sees the view, meditation, conduct, and result of practice as obscurations of awareness, so one does not rely on the calm and insight of resting the mind, thereby being superior. In the Root Verses, it says, "The Heart Essence, when definitely condensed, has no dullness or sharpness in the faculties. The mind's concepts exhaust the limits of words, it is seen by the faculties, not by wisdom. Because the nature of reality is not seen by words, the common vehicle does not accomplish the purpose. Because it is the path-appearance of the three kayas, seeing this is not a reversal of the three realms. Because all phenomena are equally of one taste, the ground, path, and result are not dependent." And so forth. Alala, the difference between this vehicle and others is as vast as heaven and earth; even if taught, it is not understood; even if explained, it is not comprehended, merely grasping at names. For those who place recognition on the previous introductions, because they lack the karmic connection with the secret Heart Essence of the Great Perfection of Self-Nature, no matter what they do, they will not approach Buddhahood, not even by a single previous habit. To burst into laughter at despair is most wonderful! Now, explaining the method of how to practice the path with distinctions: Without negating objects, nor grasping the mind, without wavering from the naturally co-emergent state, one goes to the intention of the vast Great Samantabhadra. This is the general teaching. In "Without Letters," it says, "The naturally abiding state, primordially unaltered, not transformed by appearances, not modified by mind, abiding in the space of dharmata is the intention." Thus it is said. Without wavering from the essence of inner awareness appearing nakedly in clear, empty transparency, the objects of outer appearances do not

Take. Do not scatter the mind of inner thought outwards. Without binding awareness with non-dual meditation, but rather letting it remain naturally and openly. It is to insert awareness into the balance with four methods of settling and three samādhis. The four methods of settling are: settling like a mountain king, settling like an ocean, settling like awareness, and staring at appearances. The three samādhis are: the great samādhi of self-abiding, the great samādhi of sudden descent, and the great samādhi of expansive growth. Among these, the four settlements are taught in conjunction with the stages of arising during practice. First, the ocean-like settlement is taught first: not scattering, not gathering, naturally clear and bright. The clear ocean does not move, it is equality itself. The nature of reality is clear and profound, the state of self-arisen wisdom. It is to abide free from hope and fear of arising and ceasing. Just as the ocean is not stirred by the wind, and when stars appear, the stars appear but the water is not moved or stained, so too, when awareness is clear and transparent, and the field of appearances is unobstructed, yet not tainted by grasping, awareness is placed without moving in the state of clear transparency. From the absence of letters, the meaning of the ocean-like settlement is: it is not appearance, nor does it make it appear; it is not emptiness, nor does it exist in emptiness; it is not clarity, but the realm of great clarity; it is not sinking, and there is no naturally arising agitation. It does not move, it will not move, it will not change; it does not stir, it will not stir, it transcends all movement. It does not arise from action, look to the great method of settling. Do not scatter or gather, abide in the state of one settlement. It is not abiding, and there is no going beyond it. In the secret ocean of wisdom, let it naturally and vastly abide in the unmoved sphere. From the great ocean that is difficult to fathom, look to the summit of the victory banner that never sinks. Without the mind of emptiness, it is the great unconditioned body. Because there is no action, it is victorious over all actions. Originally unborn, it is the unconditioned settlement itself. Not transformed by appearances, not fabricated by the mind. If the nature of reality abides in the sky, then the meaning is shown. The wisdom of the dharmakāya completely abandons thought, and if there is no movement, then that is the meaning of meditation. If one does not grasp any of the objects of focus, it is like stars appearing in the depths of the ocean. Because there is no grasping, the clear appearance is not obstructed. That is the way of abiding in meaning. Thus it is said. Here, some who are not skilled in the tantras, exposing their ignorance, speak only of partial
