Because it is not established in one's own mind, and because there is no clarity or non-clarity, it is not established as self-illuminating. This, which transcends knowing and not-knowing, and cannot even be established as mere knowing, is called the Great Perfection of Complete Separation from Extremes. Although it is expressed with indicative terms such as self-arisen wisdom, bodhicitta, dharmakaya, the Great Perfection of Spontaneous Fulfillment of the Absolute, and nakedly clear self-illuminating awareness, these are merely established for the sake of understanding. In reality, one must realize that it is the Great Inexpressible. If it is not like that, but one clings to the meaning of the name, then there will be no difference between it and the self-awareness and self-illumination of the Mind-Only school, which involves the duality of grasping and the grasped. Here, those who have not trained their intelligence and want to babble about this, because they hold these two to be one, arrogantly say, "We know this self-awareness!" The system of this Great Perfection of Naturalness, its methods of measuring separation from extremes, etc., are mostly similar to the Madhyamaka-Prasangika. The difference is that in Madhyamaka, emptiness, emptiness like the sky, is taken as the basis for calculation. Here, awareness, which is primordially pure, naked, unestablished, and uninterrupted, is taken as the basis. Then, the dharmas that arise from within it are measured as being liberated from extremes, like the sky. As the Prasangika says: "Because many are not abandoned, it is beyond words. Because one is not established, its nature is pure. Because its nature is pure, all meanings are accomplished. The nature of purity and the basis, the basis of samsara and nirvana, accumulation and insubstantiality, the mute and the deaf are beyond expression." And again: "Because it is unconditioned, its essence is empty. Because the object of expression is cut off, it does not abide in extremes. Because defilements are exhausted, it is not obstructive. The source of memory is cut off, its essence is clear. Clear awareness does not conceptualize the extremes of objects. Because it is beyond sound, true, and without words, all dependencies are exhausted." And as it says in the Ornament of Precious Jewels: "In the realm of dharma, there is no action or non-action. The nature of space is primordially pure. The dharmakaya itself has no characteristics. In the vastness without inside or outside, the nature of vastness is without extremes or entities. This Great Perfection view, the secret union, is supreme. Although there are very many occasions for vehicles, the secret meaning is only one nature. The nature of dharma is all-encompassing and without characteristics." Now is the time to realize the nature of space, in which both grasping and the grasped have never existed.

Here, in order for all dharmas to appear to yogis as unattached and completely liberated, as a sign of the dissolution of inner clinging, the external objects of grasping are shown to be liberated in all directions. When looking outward at the external world: Everything is empty and clear, hazy and indistinct, transparent and unobstructed. There is no solidity, no attachment, and it is free from dharma. Appearances, sounds, memories, awareness, experiences, and feelings are no longer the same as before. Is this a manifestation of naturally occurring madness? As if in a dream, one bursts into laughter at oneself. Here, because one has ascertained the time of one's own realization, it is possible to understand the appearances of all yogis. Just as one who is skilled in causality sees the illusion of a magic show as unreal, thereby understanding the appearances of others who know causality as well. These appearances of the external world, which were previously seen as having inherent existence, when the time of realization is certain, and the clinging to the truth of one's own nature is reversed, one feels that all objects of grasping are like dreams, reflections of the moon in water, and mirages—empty and clear, hazy and indistinct, transparent and unobstructed. Whatever appears, one feels that there is no solidity, no attachment, and all appearances arise as unattached self-display. Beings also feel that their habits have changed compared to before, and they feel that everything appears as unattached, wondering if all of this is also understood by others. Experiences, hearing, memories, and awareness also disappear as before, emptiness dissolves, and awareness opens up, with no thoughts arising at all. One wonders where such a state has gone, and in the places of arising, feeling, and abiding, self-liberation occurs, and knowledge becomes clear. Sometimes, one's own actions and all appearances and sounds become unattached, and one bursts into laughter, wondering if one is mad, or if others are mad, or if one is in the bardo or a dream? Thus one knows. The naked appearance of unattached awareness is present in everyone, so what difficulty is there in realizing it? It is right here! Unconditional compassion arises nakedly, and one speaks of it to others as well. One speaks of vajra songs, unattached conduct, and awareness without clinging. All transparent and unobstructed appearances arise simultaneously. At this time, the dharmakaya of self-liberation of grasping and being grasped arises from within, and it is called the purification of the object of clinging to the self. As it is said in the *Muktika-mala* (String of Pearls): The dharmas of naturally arising appearances, without impurity, coarse and subtle are liberated. Without grasping and being grasped, confusion is liberated. Without wavering, karmic winds are liberated. Transparent and unobstructed.
