I will give away what I possess. Abandoning arrogance and being free from ego, For the sake of essential meaning, I do not spare my life. To those who do not deviate from the teachings and possess signs, I bestow the unborn teaching that possesses essential meaning. Thus it is said. Examination: Before requesting the Dharma, examine whether one is a suitable vessel or not. Either entrust them with difficult tasks, or scold them with words that strike the heart, or examine whether they lose faith when their behavior is contrary, or examine their generosity by saying they want this and that wealth. If they are not a suitable vessel, they will retreat due to loss of faith or stinginess with possessions. For such people, benefit and upholding vows are impossible, so it is good to clearly know not to associate with them. If it is not like that, but they abide in faith and generosity, it is a sign of having karmic connections from previous lives. Even if wealth and so on are not needed, taking them for the sake of completing the accumulations has the necessity of not disrupting the interdependent connection between teacher and student. As it says in the *All-Creating King*: "Separated from worldly attachment, for the sake of examining the lineage, the lama takes all the body and possessions, the difference between able and unable possessing signs, I bestow the All-Creating King possessing essential meaning." Thus it is said. Even if it is not necessary for me, the holy one takes it and offers it to the Three Jewels. Thus it is said. Entrusting to the fortunate: The characteristics of the entrusting teacher, and the characteristics of the receiving student. The teacher is learned and possesses compassion, liberated and possesses blessings, familiar and possesses signs and measure, the degree of connection has meaning and carries the great burden of propagating the Dharma. As it says in the *Self-Arisen Tantra*: "The teacher possessing the meaning of vajra, has a good nature and is skilled in teaching, has obtained empowerment and applies secret mantra to the meaning, knows all outer and inner affairs, is inseparable from the yidam deity, does not stray from samadhi, possesses the meaning of the Great Perfection instructions, is skilled in the secret tantras of secret mantra, understands all outer and inner methods of accomplishment, does not deviate from the meaning of the view, abandons outer and inner secret actions, qualities are like precious jewels, enjoying an inexhaustible treasure." Thus it is said. And as it says in the *Ornament of Clear Realization*: "The great Vajradhara lama, will explain the sequence in detail. The lama who is complete with characteristics, is like the source of all qualities, is the basis for perfect enlightenment." Thus it is said. The false image of

Regarding the master: From Rangshar: To become a holder of the words of a wise master, one who is ignorant yet arrogant, foolish and blindly following words, not contemplating the meaning of secret mantras, cutting off others' thoughts with arrogant words, entering a wrong path, not having seen the mandala of empowerment, vows already corrupted, unable to answer questions, having little learning yet great arrogance, an unexamined master is the demon of the disciple, not a master who teaches secret mantras, unable to teach Dzogchen Ati, one should not associate with such a one. Thus, it is advised to abandon. The characteristics of the disciple who receives are: having the signs of being able to hold the teachings, therefore, entrusting this essence of essence to him, the teachings will abide for a long time, and countless beings will be led to the path of enlightenment, and this tradition will not decline, which is accomplished by the common and extraordinary merit of sentient beings. Furthermore, from the Ornament of Clear Realization: Holding the view and meditation, having great faith and diligence, being able to give and respecting the master, having asceticism and being wary of sins, holding with unwavering steadfastness. Or, being patient and slow in speech, appearing foolish but having a sense of relaxation, having few thoughts and being naturally slow, having few actions of body and speech, and being wise can hold. Furthermore, from the Jeweled Garland: Limbs are coarse and the color is black, teeth are white and well-aligned, the corners of the eyes are slightly red, the characteristics of the hair are also important, swirling to the right and being dark brown, having little respect for the body, external behavior is ordinary, speech flows naturally, or, the various ways of speaking, just as others have said, this person also speaks in the same way. Teaching the pith instructions of Dzogchen, if these characteristics are gathered in one person, whether it is the lineage of a butcher, or the lineage of a prostitute, or the lineage of a sweeper, no matter what kind of bad lineage they belong to, one should entrust this essence of secret instructions to them. Thus it is said. Now, the sky peg that gathers the definitive meaning of the pith instructions into the great perfection of dharmata, the great self-settling: In short, for whatever appears, objects, mind, conditions, etc., without applying antidotes, without abandoning with effort, but abiding in its own place, self-settling, this is the key of awareness. Conditions appear and are liberated in their own place, this is self-settling, this is the key of naked awareness.
