Just as stirring muddy water with a stick, the antidote itself is the same as what is to be abandoned and the act of abandoning. Afflictions themselves are not the nature of reality, as they are no different from the consciousness of ordinary fools, and therefore cannot transcend samsara. In the "Union of Sun and Moon," it says: Are these afflictions to be abandoned? Are they to be purified? Are they to be transformed? Or are they to be left to naturally subside? For each of these, are they to be tamed by a corresponding antidote? Or are they to be placed in one's own system? Or is it itself the nature of reality? Or do they liberate themselves by themselves? The Teacher spoke thus. Then Vajradhara replied: Listen, Great Sage! These words that I have taught reside in the minds of all sentient beings. They bind them to samsara, obscuring great bliss. These are not to be abandoned. If one does not realize suchness, it is like a yogi's body and shadow. From that, that itself arises spontaneously, so it is not abandoning by abandoning. Likewise, it is not by purifying, nor does it change by transforming. Without realizing the unchanging essence, like a crystal rock or a jade stone, one cannot purify or transform it. In places that are pure by nature, it is observed by those who possess yoga. Likewise, it is not pacified either. Without knowing manifest higher vision, like Mount Meru, the king of mountains, no one can destroy it. It is not liberated by an antidote. Without knowing self-purification without searching, like muddy water desiring to clear, it does not clear by clearing outwardly. That itself is not the nature of reality. Without knowing spontaneous self-appearance, like the appearance of ordinary fools, attachment does not reverse. Thus it is said. Therefore, the efforts of other vehicles cannot purify it. Here, from the key point of realizing self-awareness as penetrating, it is purified in the expanse without abandoning. That is, by meditating on the appearance of effortful self-establishment, one is liberated, and by realizing the effortless self-liberation of awareness, Trekchö, one is liberated through penetrating realization. However, awareness penetratingly does not liberate afflictions, but the afflictions themselves are liberated by themselves, like a snake's knot. The key to the liberation of afflictions themselves in arising and liberation lies in not forgetting the state of realization of awareness penetratingly, so although it seems like awareness liberates afflictions, in reality it is not so. Again, in the same tantra, it says: Listen!

Listen further, these are two kinds of wisdom stages, namely, with effort and without effort. Those with effort should be left in their own place. Through the degree of familiarization with appearances, when the appearance of pure wisdom arises naturally in all places, inside and out, it is not born from conditions. Even if they arise, they are liberated in their own place, in their own ground. Therefore, this is the appearance of yoga. Those without effort are like this: self-liberation by oneself, oneself in oneself, self-nature liberation, like iron attracting iron, like stone striking stone. Oneself is the great antidote to oneself, through the realization of self-nature Great Perfection. Whatever familiarization is like this, by not seeking, one finds the meanings; by not meditating, great bliss increases; one directly knows in self-nature. This encounters anyone, even those with the five heinous sins, by familiarizing with this, they are liberated, there is no doubt about it. Thus it is said. For the sky iron without good or bad, acceptance or rejection, all afflictions, karma, and habitual tendencies are the magical displays that arise as play from the power. The antidote, doing good, even the path of liberation itself, is also the magical display that arises as play from the power. Since both arise primordially as play from the power, recognizing their nature and abiding without alteration is the key. Speed is the same, pace is the same, shaking from the ground is the same. Conditions arise, compounded phenomena, not beyond cause and effect, self-releasing, just releasing, the cycle of cause and effect is precious. The arising of various kinds of conceptualizations to be abandoned, and all the good thoughts of the antidote that abandon them, are equal in arising as play from the power of awareness, therefore, without good or bad, acceptance or rejection, abiding in one's own state is precious. That is to say, these two, good thoughts and bad thoughts, arise in the state of awareness, and the speed of thinking about objects is the same, so there is no difference in how they appear to stop and naturally vanish. These two, now in the state of awareness, appear as companions of appearance, there is no difference. Initially, shaking from the ground, clearly appearing or arising outwardly, there appears to be no difference. The good thought as the aspect of the antidote, and the bad thought as the aspect of what is to be abandoned, both are precious in cycling cause and effect in the state of awareness with self-liberation and great just-releasing. The good thoughts of the path's antidote—view, meditation, conduct, and result—and all the deluded bad thoughts to be abandoned, initially have no root, so even if you search, there is no end. Now they do not exist, but if you examine them by appearance, they do not exist.
