That is, to settle the mind in a state of non-thought, without the slightest distraction. This is also the object of non-thought in the state of emptiness. In general, objects are said to be included in two types: conceptual and non-conceptual, and this is also included there. In short, it can be summarized as meditating on all desires in a state of single-pointed focus, its essence is mind-abiding, the necessity is to hope for the result because of its stability, and the function is to want to prevent the apprehended and the apprehender. As it is said in the Madhyamakavatara, "Meditation is mind-abiding, cutting off the inner and outer movements, the apprehended and the apprehender cease." And again, as it is said in the same treatise, "Nerves, winds, and bindus, bodily postures, objects, and emptiness, meditation is what is desired." These are precisely because they want to prevent the apprehended and the apprehender, so they take them as objects to be grasped, and the mind also tends to hold them. Therefore, this is only a method of entering the profound Dharma, not the yoga of profound meaning itself. Contemplation is a special characteristic of this Great Perfection, just as fire necessarily has heat, and water necessarily has moisture. Awareness has its own inherent contemplation. Therefore, once awareness is recognized, it will abide in its own inherent contemplation. Without deliberate practice, the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-thought will naturally arise. The bardo is also like this, the appearance of self-born contemplation is like the appearance of something inherent in awareness. It is the same here, once the mind becomes the path, the experience of meditating on mind-abiding, effort will have it, letting go will lose it, this is the Dharma nature. Once awareness becomes the path of wisdom, it will abide in the stream of self-born natural contemplation. The merits that arise naturally will be constantly continuous and will not be separated. Therefore, the meditator focuses on the state of mind without thought, and the yogi nakedly recognizes the state of awareness without thought. Although the two are similar in non-thought, if the mind abides in the state of non-thought, the body posture and so on will collapse, and it will not be able to reach nakedness. Awareness without thought is the opposite of this, so there is a big difference. The practitioner of the mind path pacifies the conceptual thoughts of the object through the power of antidotes, and the temporary conceptual thoughts disappear without a trace, while the seer of awareness liberates the conceptual thoughts. Both are like the disappearance of thoughts, thinking, and attachment, but the former, because it has not cut off the root, attachment and clinging will naturally appear, and will not arise

The mind thinks that there will be uninterrupted arising, but here, because there is no place of arising and no cause of arising, the root is severed, and the radiant light of compassion manifests inwardly without interruption, like images appearing in a mirror. It is very different to see it arising outwardly, like sunlight radiating rays. Furthermore, the state of mind abiding in its own nature and the state of awareness abiding in its own nature are similar in being clear and non-conceptual, but the mind has the clinging of grasping and being grasped, so there is attachment to the place of abiding. Awareness, on the other hand, is unobstructed and completely transparent, so there is a great difference. Furthermore, in the clarity of awareness, the clarity of the appearance of objects does not cease, and the arising of memory and thought from the mind projecting onto external objects, both are similar in the appearance and knowing of objects, but awareness does not follow after objects. Although objects appear inwardly, awareness is completely transparent, so the root of conceptual thought is severed. The mind projects onto external objects, and the root is not severed, so there is a difference in the arising of conceptual thought. The "Six Spaces" says: "The stainless self-mind and, the non-conceptual self-awareness, are similar, similar, don't be mistaken. The unobstructed, deep, clear appearance and, the clinging to the stream of thoughts of sentient beings, are similar, similar, don't be mistaken. The meditation of not searching and abiding and, the rest of the channels, winds, and mind, are similar, similar, don't be mistaken. The object-appearance of non-remembering awareness and, the delusion of the six realms of memory and thought, are similar, similar, don't be mistaken." In short, meditation with a focus of mind is the clinging of grasping and being grasped, while the samadhi of awareness naturally abiding is the wheel of the dharma of naturally abiding reality. Therefore, there is a difference between the practice of the higher mind, which is the cause of generating samsara, and the intention of the Buddhas, which directly connects to liberation and nirvana, abiding in its own place. The "Destroying Vajra" says: "That which arises from naturally abiding nature, is said to be true samadhi." It also says: "The unmade, naturally abiding, reality, as it is without change, is the intention of the Buddhas." Here, compared to common meditation methods, this path of the "Heart Essence" is superior in five ways: Because of the naked awareness of realization, there is no sharpness or dullness of faculties; because of the transparent and unobstructed direct realization by one's own power, there is no reliance on the wisdom of thought and judgment; because of the realization of the transparent awareness that transcends words, there is no expectation of the meaning of erudition and verbal teachings.
