There is no regret for danger. There is no regret for abandoning one's homeland and leaving one's birthplace. There is no regret for giving up wealth for the sake of Dharma, even if it means going hungry. There is no regret for abandoning sin, even if it means falling into the lower realms. The six ways in which a bad vessel is distant from the Dharma are: Like a pig, only knowing how to eat whatever it finds, it cannot accomplish anything. Like a peacock that is full of itself, it does not know how to associate with others. Like a solitary boulder, it does not know how to adapt to circumstances. Like a wedge that is driven in everywhere, it cannot be restrained. Like a snake, it is malicious and difficult to tame. Like a monkey, it is frivolous and cannot accomplish anything. Like an ox, it is foolish and lacks wisdom, unable to understand the Dharma. Therefore, one should abandon these and cherish practice. The six Dharmas that prevent one from being controlled by a bad vessel are: In this life, cast away attachment like worthless possessions. Rejoice in virtue and cherish it as a treasure in your heart. Banish the evil demon of pride and arrogance, rely on humble ground, and regard it as a sign of accomplishment. Abandon the army of demons that clings to opposites, and cast away discursive thoughts as bad omens that bring misfortune. If one possesses these, one is a good vessel for practicing the excellent Dharma. The six attitudes that lead to the ultimate perfection of the Dharma are: Like being threatened by the Lord of Death, chased by an executioner. Like being weary of samsara, like a resentful couple. Like being disgusted by illusory appearances, like seeing repulsive food. Like being disillusioned with worldly affairs, like being deceived by a friend. Like a lazy farmer encountering a barren field ravaged by hail. Like close relatives severing ties, like children turning into enemies. Possessing these qualities, the true Dharma will reach its culmination. The six types of people who do not possess these qualities are: Even if they have heard the Dharma, they will only become argumentative debaters. Even if they give teachings, they will only be jealous and cover up their own shortcomings. Even if they meditate, they will only be filled with fantasies and wishful thinking. Even if they contemplate, they will only be greedy for wealth and profit. Even if they are alone, they will only be filled with afflictions and discursive thoughts. Even if they keep vows, they will only accumulate afflictions. One should carefully observe these six types of people and stay far away from them. The six ways to look inward at oneself are: Observe whether you have severed your connection with samsara. Observe whether you harbor attachment and aversion towards enemies and friends. Observe whether you have good intentions when you walk. Observe whether you have reached the standard of accomplishment when you meditate. Observe whether you have developed wrong views after benefiting others. Observe whether you have pure visions at the time of death. If you observe in this way, you will reach the peak of good aspirations. The six faults of being distant from the Dharma are: Not practicing the important Dharma teachings because you have not thought about death. Not understanding that practicing great and excellent Dharma teachings can be deceptive. Relatives and friends
