It also guides. In the "Jewel Lamp Treatise," it says: "With faith, abandoning the state of unfreedom, it is the supreme of leisure. With faith, one transcends the path of demons, and it increases the gate of special wisdom. It is the path that shows the supreme path of liberation." Thus it is said. Faith fulfills the hope of desire, like a wish-fulfilling jewel. In that very text, it says: "Faith is the supreme of treasure, wealth, and feet. Faith delights in giving completely. Faith is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, granting what is needed and desired." Thus it is said. Faith is like a hero, cutting off non-virtue. In the "Sutra Requested by the Ocean," it says: "With faith, one obtains the power of devotion to the Buddhas and so forth, the power of entering with trust in karma and its ripening, the power of not abandoning the mind of enlightenment, the power of steadfastness in taking the deity as one's practice, and the power of abandoning all non-virtue and enduring all misdeeds." Therefore, with faith, one abandons the state of unfreedom and gathers virtue, so the person with faith is more excellent than others and is rare. In that very text, it says: "Faith has no attachment to the gate of attachment. It is the one supreme leisure that abandons the state of unfreedom. Faith is the cause of attaining the state of victory. Those who have faith in such a Dharma are rare in their respective assemblies of beings." Thus it is said. Therefore, faith is the first of the seven riches, and having it is noble. In the "Inconceivable Secret Sutra," it says: "Because one possesses faith, joy, devotion, and a mind without defilement, one has no doubt about karma and its ripening, no hesitation or double-mindedness, and possesses devotion, realization, and trust. Knowing that the karma of good and evil and its ripening will not be wasted, one does not commit evil deeds even for the sake of one's life, but practices the ten paths of virtuous action. Through generosity, enjoyment increases; through moral discipline, higher realms increase; through learning, wisdom increases; and through meditation, all qualities increase." The fault of not having faith is: "For those without fortune, there is not even a little faith. Its faults are extremely vast." Although the faults of an unbeliever without the fortune of Dharma, even without faith as small as a sesame seed, are immeasurable, to summarize briefly: "Like a stone sunk in the bottom of the ocean, one is separated from the dry land of liberation. Like a stiff boat, there is no time to be liberated from samsara. Like a beggar with a severed arm, there is no share of virtue."

Without faith, it is like a seed that has been burned, and the sprout of Bodhi does not grow. Like a blind person, one cannot see the appearance of the Dharma. Like being caught in a whirlpool, one constantly wanders in samsara. Just as a blind turtle in the depths of the ocean rarely encounters a floating log, without faith, it is impossible to reach the shore of liberation. Just as a boat without oars cannot cross to the other shore, without faith, one cannot be delivered from the river of suffering. Just as a person with empty hands cannot take anything even if they go to a mountain of gold, without faith, one cannot attain qualities. Just as a seed burned by fire cannot sprout, without faith, the sprout of Bodhi cannot arise. Just as a blind person goes to a temple, without faith, one cannot see the appearance of the Dharma. Just as a fox falls into a whirlpool, without faith, whatever one does becomes the karma of samsara, and one can never attain the Bodhi of liberation, there is this fault. The Sutra of Ten Dharmas says: For those without faith, white dharmas do not arise. Therefore, without faith, the loss is great, so one should generate faith. The places where faith arises are: the six places where pure Dharma and faith arise are: faith of desire arises from weariness of existence; faith of admiration arises from weariness of bad friends; faith of respect arises from weariness of this life; faith of joy arises from excellent objects; faith of conviction arises from hearing about cause and effect; faith of determination arises from hearing and thinking. Faith of desire arises from seeing the nature of samsara. Faith of admiration arises from weariness of bad friends. Faith of respect arises from the rare objects of the Three Jewels. Faith of joy arises from excellent objects or stories. Faith of conviction arises from hearing about cause and effect. The faith of thinking about the Dharma arises from hearing profound Dharma. If these faiths have not arisen, then one should focus on the nature of these objects and cause faith to arise. The Bodhisattva Pitaka says: The so-called having faith means having great faith in superior objects, that is, relying on virtuous spiritual friends, desiring to see the noble ones, desiring to hear the sacred Dharma, believing in karma and its ripening, and knowing that Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Shravakas, etc., are virtuous spiritual friends, and relying on them with faith and pleasing them. One should rely on the causes for increasing faith and continuously increase it.
