Will forever wander in samsara. Therefore, whatever you rely on, strive to generate faith. Without faith, even if you have many other qualities, they are useless, like being beautiful but without eyes, so generate faith. Also, contemplate impermanence at all four times and generate faith, contemplate subtle karmic results and generate faith, contemplate the qualities of anything and generate faith, contemplate the preciousness of the Dharma and generate faith, contemplate the kindness of the Guru and generate faith, contemplate the pure perception of Dharma friends and generate faith, contemplate the qualities of the Buddha and generate faith. Because even a moment's passing is regrettable, regard everything other than yourself as wonderful. Cultivate faith without high or low, or sectarian bias, and cherish taming your own mind. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: 'Free from pride, what need is there to ask for much? Tame your own mind, as the Bhagavan said, the mind is the root of Dharma.' Therefore, abandon those dissimilar and misguided faiths, and the advice for making faith lasting is: Knowing the pitfalls of faith and abandoning them, do not have faith in anything other than the holy ones. Some people's faith increases or decreases due to slight causes. When bad conditions disappear, there is no faith at all. Some people think too much, try everything, but cannot persevere to the end. Some people are not focused, acting as they please. Some people have no opinion, blindly following others, changing their minds with the slightest breeze. Abandon these six situations to make faith last. Therefore, even if it is faith, there are six states where it has not become true faith, so abandon them. Generate constant respectful faith without deceit. What are the six? For example, some beginners act as if they have great faith when they are with the Guru, but after leaving the Guru, they are worse than ordinary people, so abandon that. Some people's faith grows quickly when they encounter favorable conditions, but it disappears in an instant, so abandon that too. Some people only practice the Dharma they like, or before their illnesses and demonic obstacles are resolved, they act as if they have great faith, but once the illness is cured or their wishes are fulfilled, they abandon it, so abandon that too. Some people practice many virtuous deeds at the same time, but never complete any of them, so abandon that too. Some people do not have unwavering faith in one profound Dharma and one root Guru, but practice as they please, so abandon that too. Some people have only a little faith

One should also abandon the sudden panic that arises from causes and conditions, and which diminishes slightly due to those conditions. First examine, and once you have accepted the Dharma and the Guru, then maintain devotion and respect without weariness or increase and decrease. How to make faith firm: First, thoroughly examine the objects of faith. Afterwards, be like the unchangeable king of mountains, like the sun, sky, and ocean without increase or decrease, like the bowstring without slackness, like the bridge without weariness, like the great river without interruption, like the silk thread with suppleness, and firm like the sky that cannot be taken away by conditions. Noble beings first seek a Guru and the Dharma through examination and analysis. Having found them, unwavering faith is like the king of mountains, faith without increase or decrease is like the sun, faith without shallowness is like the ocean, faith without regret is like a mother, faith without end is like the sky, faith without slackness is like a drawn bowstring, faith that cannot be taken away by others or by scolding is like the sky, faith without weariness is like a bridge, faith without interruption is like a river, and faith adorned with respect and suppleness is like a silk thread. Possessing these ten qualities, one should rely on it. In the Heap of Jewels Sutra, it says: Son of good family, you should serve the virtuous friend with respect and faith like the ocean. Obey the teachings. May I also, like that, quickly become the guide of all sentient beings. The benefits of relying on and generating faith in this way are: The benefits of faith are immeasurable. It is the basis of all white Dharma, eliminates suffering, leads to the path of enlightenment, becomes a vessel for profound Dharma, is approved by the holy ones, and possesses perfect qualities. Therefore, people of noble character, diligently make the lotus of a hundred faiths bloom. If we summarize the immeasurable qualities of faith, it is: It is the basis of all white Dharma, eliminates all the suffering of samsara, grasps the path of liberation, becomes a vessel for profound Dharma, and becomes the Buddha and Bodhisattva.
