Fifteenth, Commentary on the Chapter on Reflecting on the Nature of Faith. Fifteenth, Commentary on the Chapter on Reflecting on the Nature of Faith. Having thus understood the nature of impermanence, the instruction to engage in reflecting on the nature of faith, which is the root of all dharmas, is as follows: Having thus realized the nature of impermanence, cherish the host of faith as the one and only thing. Faith alone is important for traversing the path to liberation. As it is said in the Precious Garland: Because one has faith, one relies on the Dharma; because one has wisdom, one knows correctly. Of these two, wisdom is the main one; its precursor is faith. And as it is said in the Heap of Jewels: For people without faith, white dharmas do not arise; it is like a seed burned by fire, from which a blue sprout does not grow. And as it is said in the Uttaratantra: The ultimate meaning of self-origination is to be realized only through faith. Now, in explaining the nature of faith in detail, first, the essence of faith is: the mind that is extremely clear, focusing on the objects to be abandoned and adopted through engagement and disengagement. In terms of classification: The faith of aspiration abandons and adopts cause and effect. The faith of admiration focuses the mind intensely on the supreme object. The faith of reverence is endowed with supreme mindfulness. The faith of purity rejoices the mind intensely in qualities. The faith of trust exhausts doubt about the Dharma. The faith of conviction is particularly faithful to the supreme dharmas of hearing, thinking, and meditating. In general, most treatises explain three types of faith: purity, aspiration, and trust. That is, extreme purity of mind towards the Three Jewels, aspiration to adopt and abandon the Four Truths, and faith in the law of cause and effect. Here, six types are explained: aspiration, admiration, reverence, purity, trust, and the faith of conviction. These are not separate, but only different in terms of classification and aggregation. That is, the three faiths of admiration, reverence, and purity belong to the faith of purity, while the two of aspiration and trust belong to the faith of trust, and conviction is the faith of aspiration itself, because by entering the unmistaken path of the suchness of Dharma, one abandons suffering and its origin, and aspires to liberation. First, the essence of the faith of aspiration is: the desire to adopt and abandon samsara and nirvana. The etymology is for white dharmas.

And, the faith of desiring for the sake of joy. The divisions are: wanting to abandon the suffering of samsara, wanting to attain the liberation of bodhi, and wanting to engage in the cause of these two through acceptance and rejection. For example, just as someone who desires wealth desires wealth, wanting to seek the Dharma, thereby abandoning suffering and the origin, and entering the path and cessation. The sign is not being interested in worldly affairs and engaging in listening, thinking, and meditating. The benefit is from the Sutra of the Jewel Lamp: Faith arises like a mother who goes first, it protects all good qualities and makes them grow, it eliminates doubts and saves from all rivers, faith is the symbol of a city of happiness and well-being. Thus it is. The nature of admiring faith is to have great joy in the mind towards the lama and the deity. The definition is to admire following after those objects. The divisions are: admiring the lama as someone to rely on, admiring the Buddha as someone to accomplish, admiring the Dharma as the path, and admiring the Sangha as a friend, these are the four. The example is to enter like following after a girl. The sign of arising in the continuum is seeing, hearing, and remembering the lama and deity who establish the path of liberation, and just by that, the mind is saddened and utters it in speech. The benefit is from that very text: Having faith in the Buddhas and the Dharma, delighting in the conduct of the Buddha's children, if one has faith in the unsurpassed Bodhi, then the mind of great beings arises. Thus it says. From the Secret Inconceivable Sutra: If one has faith, one will not decline from seeing the Buddha, hearing the Dharma, and honoring the Sangha, and wherever one is born, one will not be separated from it. Thus it says. The nature of respectful faith is to be careful and not to transgress the teachings, relying on joy. The definition is that the three of body, speech, and mind bow down to the superior, therefore it is respectful faith. The divisions are: with bodily respect, gentle actions such as prostrations and circumambulations; with verbal respect, praise; with affection, diligent service; and with mental respect, seeing them as worthy of offerings and being humble and obedient, these are the three. The example is like subjects respecting a king, striving with gentleness. The sign of this arising in the continuum is the absence of arrogance and haughtiness in the presence of superiors.
