Like the wind, it does not stay for long. Like a water bubble, it is fragile and without essence. Without movement, if examined, it is like a tree in water. Like an illusion, the mind is deceived. Until the stainless Buddha's enlightenment is attained, Effort will never decline! Thinking about the nature of impermanence: Because it is contained by the four extremes, there is nothing permanent. Life is uncertain, not knowing when one will die, So one must think from the depths of one's heart that one will surely die. This support of obtaining a human body is bound by the ropes of the four extremes, and there is no time for happiness, so one must practice the sacred Dharma. That is, the end of birth is death, the end of gathering is separation, the end of accumulation is exhaustion, the end of height is falling, There is nothing to rely on, it will surely be abandoned. In particular, one's own body is like a water bubble, it will surely perish. Not knowing when one will die. Will one die today? Will one die tomorrow? Will one die tonight? Lying on this bed, will it happen that after dying, one will not rise again tomorrow? Think like this. The Sutra of Auspicious Night says: Who knows if one will die tomorrow? One must strive to do it today. The great army of the Lord of Death, is not your friend! The Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior says: It is not reasonable to sit comfortably, thinking that one will not die today. The great army of the Lord of Death, is not our friend! The Nirvana Sutra says: This weak body, has many faults, is of the nature of destruction. It is always tormented by old age, sickness, and death. The Dharma of existence is boundless, and is with the enemies of change and transformation. Like me, how can I not die? Just like a frightened horse, or a jumping sheep, or a running livestock, or a flying bird, sudden death will come, so what seizes all these beings is: The Wise and Foolish Sutra says: The end of accumulation is exhaustion, the end of gathering is separation, what is done will perish, and the living will die. The Extensive Play Sutra says: Death seizes hundreds of thousands of beings, for sentient beings, it is like the Makara fish in the ocean. For dragons, it is like the Garuda; for elephants, it is like the lion; for grass and plant sentient beings, it is like fire. Death makes the powerful powerless, death takes life, like a flood driving trees. People are not two, without friends, they go alone. Because the fruit ripens from oneself, there is no autonomy. The Nirvana Sutra says: Life is short

Even if it lasts long, it will inevitably perish in the end. Therefore, everything here will certainly die. Wealth declines, and youth is destroyed by aging. A beautiful form is afflicted by disease, and life is cut off by death. Thus it is said. Therefore, since one does not know when one will die, one must contemplate that death is certain. Since there is no decrease or increase, one does not know when one will die. Merely the passing of days and nights, months and years, morning and evening, brings one closer to death. Because of decline, there is no addition to life; there is only decrease. Like the shadow of the setting sun, life decreases. Like a granary filled with grain, life is exhausted. Like a leak in a pond, life is exhausted. Similarly, like clouds vanishing in the sky, water flowing down a steep mountain, reaching the presence of an executioner, a drop of water flowing into the ocean, a giant shooting an arrow, leading sentient beings to the slaughterhouse, life decreases and death is certain. As it is said in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: "Life is constantly being depleted, without any addition, only decrease. How can we not die?" Thus it is said. Just as a cotton thread is drawn out, it is exhausted in an instant. Like water leaking from cupped hands, one does not notice the exhaustion, which is a great fault. The venerable great Brahmin Saraha said in the *Dohakośa*: "Alas, a beautiful person, hands filled with water, like water leaking, does not perceive the decay." Thus it is said. Moreover, because there is no fixed time for life, one will die. Because of obstacles such as cliffs, waterfalls, weapons, poison, and demons, the time of death is uncertain. Even without obstacles, it shortens in an instant, so death is certain. In the *Udanavarga* it is said: "Some die in the mother's womb, some die immediately after birth, some just begin to toddle, and some just begin to run. Some are old, some are young, and some are in their prime. These will die in turn. Therefore, who can be sure that this person is young and still alive? Like a tree with ripening fruit, sentient beings will die." Thus it is said. In the *Past Events Sutra* it is said: "The life of living beings is destroyed by Mara; there is nothing that is permanent." Thus it is said. In the *Vinaya Pitaka* it is said: "Constantly afflicted by disease, like constantly dripping with impurity, a body diminished by old age and death is ugly and unusable." Thus it is said. In the *Bodhisattva Pitaka* it is said: "There are nine causes of sudden death."
