Thus thinking. The moment of contemplating the impermanence of conditioned phenomena is the most supreme. Now, the signs and extent of being accustomed to it are shown: The extent of being accustomed is seeing conditioned phenomena decay. The diligent abandon fear and the affairs of this life. Not even for a moment do they stay in ordinariness, and they give rise to renunciation and weariness, and their minds become narrow. From contemplating impermanence day and night, seeing everything that appears decay, a mind that does not cling to external objects arises from the depths of the heart, and a mind like a burning fire of diligence in virtue arises, and an extraordinary fear and dread of the suffering of samsara arises from the depths of the heart, and knowing that one cannot escape death in any way, they abandon the affairs of this life, and not even for a moment do they stay in ordinary ease, but the three doors practice the Dharma, and seeing the ripening of karmic results, renunciation and weariness arise, and because they know that when death is uncertain, they do not develop dependence on anything, these are the signs and extent of being accustomed to impermanence from the depths of the heart. Now, concluding with the benefits of being accustomed in this way: Its benefits are extremely vast, naturally abandoning the faults of samsara and possessing qualities. Liberated from the clinging to permanence, the attachment and aversion of enemies, friends, and relatives are pacified. Diligent in virtue, knowing that this life is illusory. Perfectly completing the two accumulations, possessing fame, and being seen by the gods. Happily ending life and going to the heavens. Quickly attaining the state of immortal nectar. If impermanence is well generated in the mindstream, then from the depths of the heart, weariness and disgust will arise towards the phenomena of samsara, thus having the benefit of diverting attention from the phenomena of this life. The way to abandon attachment is to think that it is of no benefit and that one will surely die. Like being caught by a son who has killed his father, or like a fish caught in a net, or like a condemned person handed over to an executioner, or like entering a nest of poisonous snakes, or like entering the mouth of a rakshasa, or like entering the island of rakshasa women, or like entering the mouth of a crocodile, or like a ship wrecked in the ocean, or like a boat sinking in a river, or like being deceived by a guide in a dangerous place, or like falling into an inescapable cliff, or like being shot in the heart with an arrow, knowing that it is of no benefit in any way, thus abandoning the affairs of samsara. From the Nirvana Sutra: Always like an enemy, whatever is connected with suffering. The impure body and desires.

Alas! Who would like to benefit and eliminate suffering? There is no attachment to impermanent desires. Thus it is said. Many previously non-existent qualities will also arise in the continuum, and one will turn away from the thought of permanence, have no attachment or aversion to enemies or friends, constantly strive for virtue, know this life as an illusion, perfect the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, possess fame that accords with the Dharma, accord with the intentions of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, spend one's life with joy and happiness, and be born in the world of the higher realms of good rebirths, and as soon as one is born, one will meet the sacred Dharma and the Guru, the virtuous spiritual friend, always have independence, be ordained in the Buddhist teachings, be able to maintain celibacy until the end of one's life, spend day and night with the Dharma, practice the Mahayana Dharma, associate with noble beings, and quickly attain perfect enlightenment, etc. The door to immeasurable benefits has been spoken of. From the Mahayana pith instruction treatise, The Wish-Fulfilling Treasury, the commentary on the fourteenth chapter, Thinking About the Impermanence of Life.
