When these come, there is no opportunity to escape quickly, or to avert them with wealth and power, etc. Aging destroys youth and comes. Sickness destroys the happiness of being without illness and comes. Decay destroys all perfections and comes. Death destroys life and lifespan and comes, and there is no way to prevent it. Thinking about many examples of impermanence and generating renunciation: like guests at a market, trees by the riverbank, thunder, clouds, and the movement of the sun and moon. Think about the impermanent changes, and the swiftness of death. The guests at the market gather for a moment but then separate and leave, just as there are terrifying enemies on the road. When we separate, we will also be frightened by the demon of the Lord of Death and the appearances of the bardo. Just as we must cross a steep mountain pass on the road, we will go to the mountain pass of death. Just as there are cliffs and happiness and suffering on the road, we will each go to the realms of gods and the realms of suffering. Just as the guests experience happiness and suffering separately, we will experience the suffering of each of the six realms. As it is said in the Great Nirvana Sutra: Ignorant and wicked people, like guests at a market, disperse and enter a great cliff, alone and helpless, the road is extremely long, and even traveling day and night, they cannot know the end. They are lost in the darkness of fear, without light or lamps, with many obstacles on the road ahead, going to a helpless place, and just seeing it causes suffering from sorrow. Their bodies are different, but they go to a cliff where they do not know where they are going. Furthermore, one's own body is like a tree growing on a cliff by the riverbank, washed away by the demon of the Lord of Death like a river. The body is like a dilapidated house in summer, which is collapsed by the demon of the Lord of Death like rain. The body is like an old tree on a cliff, which is felled by the demon of the Lord of Death like a black wind of the elements. The body is like dry wood or a rotten corpse, which is burned by the demon of the Lord of Death like a mass of flames. The body is like an autumn flower, which is withered by the demon of the Lord of Death like the cold wind of the season, so one must always generate renunciation. In the Sutra Requested by Shri Datta, it says: The body sways and moves like a tree by the riverbank, and like an old house, it must be carefully repaired to be maintained. Water

Like the flow of the wind, heading towards the sea of death, like foam, bubbles, plantain, mirage. Having examined it in this way, for this body full of faults, completely eliminate the self-grasping and attachment to the body, abandon all love for life, etc., without looking at it, practice the perfection of going to the other shore. So it is said. Just as the sound of thunder and echoes in the valley are loud but leave no trace, no matter what pleasant or unpleasant praise or slander others do to me, I will not do any negation or affirmation. Knowing that one's own language is also like an echo in the valley, knowing that all dharmas are like this, cut off the thoughts of liking and disliking. In the Great Play Sutra it says: The merits of desire are like sounds, images, and echoes in the valley. Even if you hear them, don't cling to the characteristics, look at your own nature. So it is said. Just as clouds, fog, and rainbows in the sky appear for a while but eventually disappear, all external phenomena and internal thoughts of affirmation and negation appear suddenly and disappear suddenly, so one should train oneself not to have real attachment to them. Viewing the coming and going of breath as the same as this dharma. In the Samdhinirmocana Sutra it says: The coming and going and staying of breath are unstable, like clouds, fog, hail, and smoke, look at the causeless natural disappearance. So it is said. Thinking about the things that people and animals, etc., have heard of dying in the past and dying now, and combining them with oneself: In the previous sutra it says: Sentient beings, other and special human bodies, other countries and one's own places, after seeing examples of the death of relatives, enemies, and friends, fools who walk without knowing that they themselves will die. So it is said. Watching the sun, moon, and lamps go out, etc., thinking that the appearances of this life will eventually disappear, and that the clinging to the self-luminous mind will disappear, thinking about impermanence. In the previous sutra it says: The sun, moon, stars, and planets are moved by the wind, just as the flame of a lamp is moved by the wind, this life does not stay for a moment, so strive to accomplish great things. So it is said. Because the Dharma is the only friend, it is advised to rely on it: At the time of death, friends are the Three Jewels and the accumulation of merit, rely on the holy ones, and accomplish the meaning of the essence. At the time of death and on the dangerous path of the bardo, the refuge and friend is the lama who possesses the qualities mentioned earlier, the supreme Three Jewels Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the supreme yidam peaceful and wrathful mandalas and assemblies of dakinis, guiding the path, eliminating obstacles.
