Thus it is. The Awakened Ones consider that even in the time of sentient beings, the seven consciousnesses are temporary and adventitious, and are conventional knowledge. However, the ālaya-vijñāna (store consciousness) has no increase or decrease and no different modes of grasping, so the naturally inherent consciousness is the ultimate truth. In the state of Buddhahood, just as dreams dissolve upon awakening, all illusory appearances cease. Experiencing nothing appearing other than mind, and not engaging in any conceptualization, remaining in a state of self-awareness and self-illumination, that is the Dharmakāya. Through its blessings, even though it does not exist in reality, it appears to sentient beings as omniscient of all realms of existence, teaching the Dharma, and accomplishing deeds, which is the Rūpakāya (form body). Some Awakened Ones consider aspects such as the cause and effect of the mind to be ultimately true, while others consider all knowledge other than the self-illuminating experience to be conventional. To refute this: It is very reasonable that no appearances are true. But to refute the view that mind is ultimately true, there are five equalities: object and consciousness are equal, self-awareness and other-awareness are equal, grasping and experience are equal, other-powered and imputed are equal, and inherent and temporary are equal. The first is: if external objects do not exist, then the internal mind also does not exist. This is not so, because self-awareness manifestly performs the function of soothing happiness and the function of suffering torment, and so on. Objects also exist in reality, because other-awareness manifestly performs the function of burning with fire and the function of satisfying with water. Other-awareness appearing as an object is an illusion, because its object, the atom, is refuted by analysis. Self-awareness appearing as pleasure and pain is also an illusion, because its object, the moment, is refuted by analysis. Therefore, both are established in the face of illusion, and both are refuted in reality, which is the same. The scriptures also say: If there is no form, do not cling to having mind. If there is mind, do not cling to having no form. The Buddha, in the Wisdom Way Sutra, spoke of abandoning these equally, and in the Abhisamaya spoke of the Dharma. The equality of self-awareness and other-awareness is: if consciousness knows itself, then there should also be other-awareness that knows form and other things. This is not reasonable; if one knows at different times, then what is seen will be inverted.

If one recognizes simultaneity, it becomes independent, if it is said so. It is also not permissible for oneself to know oneself, because there is no duality of the knowable and the knower, just as a sword cannot cut itself. To consider grasping and experience as the same, if there is an experience of experiencing the mind, then there will also be grasping of an object, because there is no difference between experiencing and grasping. If it is said so. Because the object of grasping depends on falsehood, grasping cannot be true. Because truth that depends on falsehood is impossible. If it is said so. Experience also cannot be true, because oneself does not have the duality of what is experienced and who experiences, and there is no experiencing, because it is the nature of grasping, so it is false, and that nature has no truth. Dependent arising and imputation are the same, if dependent arising, mind and mental factors are substantially existent, then the self of the person is also substantially existent. If it is said so. That is not permissible, because if one searches for the self in the aggregates, whether it is the same or different, it cannot be found. If it is said so. Mind and mental factors are also not substantially existent, because if one searches from moment and continuum or the inside and outside of the body, it cannot be found. Innate and temporary are the same, if the naturally existing consciousness, the ālaya, exists, then the adventitious consciousness, the six aggregates, etc., also exist. If it is said so. That is not true, because relying on conditions, it sometimes arises and sometimes does not arise, so there is no naturally existing reason. If it is said so. The ālaya is also not true, because it cannot be found by searching. The present moment does not exist before and does not exist after, only things are pervaded by the past and future, so it does not exist now. From the Mother Sutra: All dharmas are equality, therefore the Perfection of Wisdom is equality. In this way, the innate wisdom of the present moment, saying that it is empty and clear, is also refuted. Here, neither the innate nor the non-innate wisdom is established, therefore it is equality in the nature of space. These have explained the tenets of the Yogācāra school. Now, to clearly state the tenets of the Svātantrika Madhyamaka school: The Svātantrika school, by distinguishing the two truths, strongly prevents the proliferation of existence and non-existence of all dharmas, and elaborately makes the establishment of appearances, and also, the nature of the upper and lower, the ultimate meaning changes.
