Due to slight differences in the way of explaining the profound meaning, the names Cittamātra, Svātantrika, and Prāsaṅgika arose. In the intent of these treatises, the intent of the Buddha is included. First, the Yogācāra Cittamātra is taught: The Cittamātrins believe that consciousness is the ultimate truth. From the two ways of general and specific characteristics in sequence, there is a common intent, self-illuminating wisdom, as well as the parikalpita, paratantra, and pariniṣpanna, etc. On this, the great scholar Vasubandhu and his followers also believed that all the Buddha's intents were included in Cittamātra, therefore they did not believe that other schools were established. In the "Commentary on the Small Commentary" it says: The root of benefiting beings is Vasubandhu, because he mainly follows his own inclinations, so he relies on knowing that it is internal, thereby attaining liberation. And so on. This treatise divides the tenets of Cittamātra into two types: general and specific explanations. First, the general explanation has three parts: the proposition, the proof, and the meaning of establishment. First, the proposition: It is believed that the consciousness of the inseparability of the grasped and the grasper is self-aware and self-illuminating, and is the ultimate truth. As it says in the *Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi*: "The experience of the mind has no other object, and its experience is not produced by others. Because the grasped and the grasper are inseparable, it is now self-manifest." And in the *Commentary on the Thirty Verses* it says: "If, like the knowable, consciousness is also conventional truth, and not ultimate truth, then these statements are unreasonable. Because conventional truth without a basis is not allowed, therefore there is no real existence in conventional truth." On this, if it is said that among the grasped and the grasper, there is the grasper but no grasped, this is what the Pratyekabuddhas allow. If both are absent, then it is the same as those who speak of emptiness, so what should be done? Even though there are no objects such as form, and the mind that grasps them, because it promises the self-awareness and self-illumination that experiences the inseparability of the two, it is not the same as emptiness and the Pratyekabuddhas. Moreover, because the grasped is false, the mind that grasps it is also false, therefore it is not established in the ultimate truth. Because if there is no grasped, there is no grasper. This is because: if there is no grasped, there is no grasper. Second, the proof: external appearances are not true existences that are different from meaning, because even in the same water, the six types of beings see different appearances. This is because of their respective karma and habitual tendencies, and the habitual mind of delusion.

It merely appears from steadfastness; though the object is one, minds are different, therefore, only the unaccomplished meaning is seen. The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says: "It is not real, it is only the mind; seeing external objects is inverted. Other- power is existent; the thoroughly conceptualized is nonexistent. The extremes of attachment and defamation will destroy speculation." The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind." That is, because the habit of appearing as external objects increases, consciousness appears as external objects, and the inner consciousness is established as dependent on the part of grasping, which is "other-powered." Therefore, external objects do not exist independently, because they appear as the cause of individual consciousnesses. Furthermore, the appearance of what is taken, such as blue, is not a substance other than the mind, because they are determined as objects together with the grasping consciousness. The Pramāṇavārttika says: "Because of the determination of simultaneous objects, blue and that mind are not different entities." The existence of the ālaya-vijñāna is established by the fact that the six consciousnesses cease and then arise again, because if there were no ālaya-vijñāna, the six consciousnesses would cease. If there were no consciousness other than the six consciousnesses, it would not be possible to arise again. The afflicted mind also exists, because there is unmingled ignorance, and because there is the co-emergent cause of the mind's consciousness, and because there is always the conceit of self. The existence of the six consciousnesses is established by common acceptance, and thus there are eight consciousnesses. Third, regarding the meaning of establishment, there are three: the object of focus, the nature of practice, and the result of establishment. There are three objects: the basis of fortune—lineage, the basis of view—the five bases, and the basis of meditation—selflessness. First, sentient beings have five lineages: the śrāvaka lineage, the pratyekabuddha lineage, the bodhisattva lineage, the uncertain lineage, and the severed lineage. The first lineage refers to those who, from beginningless time, have dull faculties, rely on other spiritual friends, and are fond of quickly attaining nirvāṇa. The second lineage refers to those who, by nature, have middling faculties, desire liberation alone, are fond of solitude, and are fond of quickly attaining nirvāṇa. The third lineage is
