Those who have a good nature are those who have great compassion for all sentient beings, and believe in the absence of self in all phenomena. They are not afraid of the great task of benefiting beings and hearing about the great deeds of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and they are happy to practice the six perfections. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: Before practice, have compassion, have faith and patience, and correctly practice virtue, these are correctly explained as signs of a good nature. The fourth are those who, no matter what circumstances they encounter, can generate faith in the path of practice. Although the Hearers (Śrāvakas) believe that existence continues even with a small degree of patience, the Mahayana practitioners believe that even if one attains the state of Arhat, changes can still occur. The fifth are those whose minds do not waver no matter what they hear about the benefits of the Dharma and liberation, the faults of samsara, the praises of the happy realms, and the sufferings of the lower realms. Even if they see true spiritual friends and wonderful things like the Three Jewels, they do not generate faith even as small as a sesame seed. They do not even have a thought of entering the Dharma, or if they do, it is only for the sake of livelihood, or they become monks for the sake of livelihood, etc. They have no faith and accumulate the negative karma of abandoning the Dharma. From the beginning, they have no real intention of taking vows, or even if they do, they are broken and only the appearance remains. These people are considered to have wrong views and can never be liberated from suffering. As it says in the Summary of the Great Vehicle: Those who are always accompanied by afflictions are those who can never be liberated from suffering. These are considered to belong to those with great desire, because they have no cause for liberation and can never obtain happiness. The five bases are divided into three: their respective nature, classification, and the intention of the Buddha. Regarding nature, form, although without substance, appears as form due to the power of the maturation of the habit of the appearance of things in the alaya consciousness. Mind is the collection of the eight consciousnesses, namely the six entering consciousnesses, the alaya consciousness, and the afflicted mind, which are eight different entities. Among them, the alaya consciousness is the basis of habits, merely the consciousness of the object as a basis. Its characteristic is the stability of the continuous stream of many moments. If we distinguish, there is the part of the result of maturation and the part of the seed, which matures by the power of good and non-good, is unobscured and remains in an unspecified state, and in which there is the fruit divided by habits.

The two are the power of arising. The retinue is: the five that go everywhere, such as touch, and thus the six things that are constantly inseparable. The object is unclear, focusing on the vast realm of containers and contents. Therefore, the seven consciousnesses and their retinues do not arise from their own continuum, but rather the habits formed by similar later existences are placed in the alaya consciousness, arising from each moment of the alaya consciousness like the shadow of a vase. This is the action of samsara, and the basis for the aggregates of consciousness containing good, non-good, and unspecified, which are the basis for reliance. Therefore, it is established as the alaya consciousness with various habits. The realm is the alaya consciousness in the sense of being naturally pure, extinguished, and associated with unconditioned qualities. From the practice of good qualities and liberation-related aspects existing in the habit alaya consciousness, the defilements of the realm are thinned, thereby weakening the power of the habit alaya consciousness on which it relies. In the "Ratnakuta Sutra," it says: "The mind-nature is spoken of and shown by the name of alaya consciousness." Here, the habit alaya consciousness, which serves as the basis of samsara, is explained in detail. The afflicted mind is the stable consciousness that clings to the meaning of self in the alaya consciousness, accompanied by nine retinues such as the view of self, and arises at all times except for the samadhi in the noble path and between the cessation samadhis. Mental factors are: fifty-one such as attention. In one continuum, there exist sixty dharmas of attention, etc., at one time. Furthermore, the relationship between the main consciousness and mental factors is not mutually observed. If observed, it would become the fault of observing along with oneself. Non-associated formations are: twenty-three such as attainment, which are merely nominal existences based on states, and have no substance. Unconditioned dharmas are unrealities not created by causes and conditions, namely suchness, as well as analytical cessation and non-analytical cessation, immovable cessation, cessation of perception and feeling, and space, which are six. Suchness refers to that which does not change into anything other than negating the self in the aggregates. Although it exists as a substance, it is considered to be neither one nor different from the essence of consciousness. Analytical cessation refers to the abandonment of suchness.
