There are two ways of taking refuge. The noble bodhisattvas who have entered the Sangha take refuge in these three in the same way in the temporary state. In order to help oneself attain Buddhahood, one takes refuge in the Three Jewels. The Buddha is the embodiment of the three kayas and activities, the Dharma is the path of cessation and realization, and the Sangha is the companion requested to enter the noble state, so they are the Three Jewels. Ultimately, the object of refuge is the qualities of abandonment and realization. The ultimate refuge is the sole Dharmakaya of the Buddha. The ultimate Three Jewels are the supreme refuge. The Path Truth is the conventional truth, and bodhisattvas still have obscurations. Therefore, there is no ultimate refuge other than the Buddha. The Buddha is not the conventional truth of the Rupakaya, but the sole Dharmakaya, which is the ultimate absolute truth. The Dharma is also the Path Truth, which is abandoned when higher states are attained, so it is the conventional truth. Bodhisattvas also still need to take refuge in the Buddha because they have obscurations. Therefore, bodhisattvas are not the ultimate refuge. The Ratnagotravibhāga states: "The Dharma and the assembly of noble ones are not a constant refuge. To seek the ultimate truth, refuge is only in the Buddha. The guide possesses the Dharmakaya, and the assembly is the ultimate of that." That is, the Buddha residing in Akanishta, whose body is the Sangha Jewel, speech is the Dharma, and mind is the Dharmakaya, is therefore the refuge, according to the view of the wise. The uncommon, the refuge of the result is the Three Jewels, which is the aspiration to achieve it in oneself. It is aimed at the future manifestation of the spontaneously accomplished Buddha of clear light. The aspect of aspiration is the refuge and object of the result. Moreover, aspiration is different from generating bodhicitta. Bodhicitta is for the benefit of others, while aspiration is for one's own benefit, and so on, there are these differences. The differences in the ways of taking refuge are: taking refuge in the cause as the cause, hoping to achieve the Three Jewels of the result in one's own continuum. Taking refuge in the Buddha is as a guide, taking refuge in the Dharma is as a path, and taking refuge in the Sangha is as a companion. The common refuge of the cause acts as the cause for the unimpeded achievement of the uncommon refuge of the result.

Moreover, taking the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the path, and the Sangha as companions, one promises to take refuge as protector. Having thus identified the object of refuge, the way to take refuge is as follows: Having thus recognized the object of refuge, one takes refuge. In the space in front, contemplate the excellent Three Jewels, and offer a vast ocean of offering clouds, both real and imagined. With oneself and all sentient beings joining their palms, think of taking refuge in the direction of the Three Jewels. To the lama, the Buddha, the Dharma, and the supreme Sangha, take refuge three times. In the space in front, in the center adorned with lotus, tree trunk, sun, moon, and lions, the root lama resides in the position of the complete-named Vajradhara, and contemplate being surrounded by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas like dense clouds, offering with real and imagined offerings, prostrating, confessing sins, and praying. Oneself and all sentient beings, spread across the surface of the earth and the edge of space, joining their palms, think of taking refuge in the lama and the Three Jewels, and express with pleasant words. Taking refuge, its benefit is that temporary wishes are fulfilled, it becomes the basis for the inner path and all Dharmas, one is not harmed by harm, one is born at the feet of the Buddha, and ultimately one achieves the Three Jewels of ultimate meaning. Therefore, one should first take refuge. It can accomplish all desired things, enter the ranks of inner Buddhists, and become a suitable basis for merit. As it is said in the "Seventy Verses on Refuge": "All vows are possessed, but those who have not taken refuge do not have them." And so on. One is not harmed by harm from humans and non-humans, and one is protected from the cycle of existence, clinging to the aggregates of destruction, and the inferior path that tends towards one side of peace. As it is said in the "Sutra of the Victory Banner": "Protecting from all harms, and from the inferior vehicle of destructible aggregates, therefore refuge is said to be supreme." And so on. Wherever one is born, one is born at the feet of the excellent lama and the Three Jewels, and ultimately one attains Buddhahood. As it is said in that very text: "Whoever takes refuge in the Three Jewels, they quickly attain Buddhahood." And so on. What should be learned is to take refuge one hundred and eight times each day and night, and because one has taken refuge in the lama, one respects virtuous friends and does not rely on evil friends.
