The lifespans of the six, etc., are each able to reach that many years, counting one day as one year. For example, the five hundred years of the Four Great Kings is five hundred years, counting fifty human years as one day. The thousand years of the Thirty-three, the two thousand years of the Yama, the four thousand years of the Tushita, the eight thousand years of the Nirmanarati, and the sixteen thousand years of the Paranirmitavasavartin, all count one day as one year. The beings in the Black Line Hell live for a thousand years, the beings in the Aggregating Hell live for two thousand years, the beings in the Crying Hell live for four thousand years, the beings in the Great Crying Hell live for eight thousand years, the beings in the Burning Hell live for sixteen thousand years, the beings in the Very Hot Hell live for half an intermediate kalpa, and the beings in the Avici Hell live for one intermediate kalpa. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: 'The six hells beginning with Revival, in order, are equal to the lifespan of the desire gods and their days and nights.' etc. The cold hells are said to be located adjacent to this. The eight kinds of sentient beings tormented by extreme cold due to blizzards of snow and ice are: the Blister Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the Achuchu Hell, the Atata Hell, the Huhuva Hell, the Cracking Like a Blue Lotus Hell, the Cracking Like a Red Lotus Hell, and the Cracking Like a Great Red Lotus Hell. They suffer immeasurable pain from the cold. Trapped by blizzards of snow and ice, in extreme cold, there are eight hells. The Blister Hell is where blisters the size of thumbs appear due to the cold. The Bursting Blister Hell is where those blisters burst and become infected. The Achuchu Hell is where the sound 'Achuchu' is made. The Atata Hell is where only the sound 'Atata' can be made. The Huhuva Hell is where no sound can be made, and the teeth chatter stiffly. The Cracking Like a Lotus Hell is where the body cracks into four petals, like a lotus. The Cracking Like a Blue Lotus Hell is where the wounds turn inside out and are connected by tiny water veins. The Cracking Like a Great Red Lotus Hell is where it cracks into sixteen or thirty-two petals, or a hundred or a thousand petals. The lifespan of these hells is: a container filled with one hundred khal capacity of sesame seeds, taking out one sesame seed every hundred years until the sesame seeds are exhausted, this is the lifespan of the Blister Hell. The lifespans of the remaining hells are twenty times longer in order. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: 'From a sesame store, taking one sesame seed every hundred years, when exhausted, is the lifespan of the Blister Hell. The lifespan of the others is twenty times longer.'

Thus it is. Then, the second place of the evil destinies: the preta realm, where beings suffer from the torment of hunger and thirst. Those with external obscurations find that even when they see good and desirable things, they become parched. Those with internal obscurations experience their hearts and lungs ablaze. The common obscuration is that they fixate on food and drink. Even after twelve years, they cannot hear the sound of water. They appear to be harmed and guarded by others. Because they are always hungry and desire only food and drink, they are called pretas. There are three types: Those with external obscurations find that even pleasant places become unpleasant. Medicine trees, forests, and great rivers appear dry and like charred stumps upon sight. The seasons also become inverted. As it says in the "Friendly Epistle": 'For pretas, the moon is hot in the summer and the sun is cool in the winter.' Those with internal obscurations experience a fire burning from their bellies, consuming all their internal organs, with smoke and flames billowing from their mouths. The common obscuration, shared by all, is that they crave food and drink and cannot bear hunger, yet they do not hear the sound of water for twelve years. Even if they see water, it is dry or appears to be guarded, so they cannot use it. Their bodies are as large as Mount Meru, but their mouths are as small as the eye of a needle. If monks and brahmins discard snot, phlegm, and impurities, and if a little of it, blessed by mantras, enters their mouths, it initially cannot enter. Once it enters, it causes suffering due to burning and so on. Even if they drink the ocean, it does not reach their throats, and the poison in their mouths causes it to dry up. On top of immeasurable suffering, they are harmed by others, and their bodies and minds are greatly harmed. As it says in the "Admonition to Students": 'With a mouth as small as the eye of a needle, they must swallow many yojanas of food. Wretched ones with large bellies, even if they drink the water of the great ocean, it does not reach the vast depths of their throats, and the poison in their mouths dries up even the moisture of the water.' Their lifespan is such that one hundred human years is one day for a preta. They experience suffering for five hundred of their own years. One hundred human years are counted as one day for a preta, and they live for five hundred years. As it says in the "Friendly Epistle": 'Some beings, bound tightly by the noose of wrongly committed actions, cannot die even after five thousand or ten thousand years.' That is also calculated in human years. The third place of the evil destinies: the animal realm, where they also devour each other and harm each other.
