生死的痛苦无法忍受。八热地狱的第一个，在复活地狱中，那些众生彼此视为仇敌，生起嗔恨之时，手中自然生出各种兵器，互相击打而死。从虚空中传来“愿复活”的声音，刚一复活，又被兵器击打，仅仅是生生死死。如《亲友书》中所说：“此间一日三百矛，猛烈击打之痛苦，以此地狱小痛苦，亦难忍受如雨淋。”如此七倍痛苦的地狱是黑绳地狱，用铁锯锯开身体。集合摧毁，在山间、石臼和地域中碾磨。号叫地狱，在燃烧的铁屋中焚烧。大号叫地狱，在两层铁屋中焚烧。用燃烧的铁锯在身体上画出黑线后锯开，粘连后又锯开，是为黑绳地狱。在山间和石臼中，从空中降下燃烧的铁锤，像磨糌粑一样碾磨，是为集合摧毁，随即又复活。在没有门的铁屋中被燃烧是为号叫地狱。在两层铁屋中焚烧是为大号叫地狱。比这些痛苦还要大七倍的是：在燃烧的炽热地面上，剥下皮肤，用木桩钉住，极度炽热从内外焚烧，用沸腾的铜汁将身体烧成灰烬。炽热地狱是在燃烧的铁地上，剥下身体的皮肤，用木桩钉住后，用锤子敲打。极度炽热从外部，从上下四方八面的火焰，以及内部从肺腑燃烧，被十一堆火焰焚烧。此外，还有燃烧的铁锤，以及不由自主地被灌入沸腾的铜汁，身体像出汗一样被烧焦。所有这些痛苦中，七倍痛苦的是最后一个，无间地狱，在燃烧的铁屋中无法忍受。击打、刺戳、锯开、磨成粉末，煮沸、穿刺，用燃烧的铁板缠绕。没有比这更痛苦的了，也没有可以施加痛苦的地方，所以叫无间地狱。在燃烧的铁屋中，阎罗卒用锤子

The suffering of birth and death is unbearable. The first of the eight hot hells, in the Reviving Hell, those beings regard each other as enemies, and when hatred arises, various weapons naturally appear in their hands, and they strike each other and die. From the sky comes the sound, "May you be revived!" As soon as they are revived, they are struck by weapons again, merely experiencing birth and death. As it says in the "Friendly Epistle": "Here, in one day, three hundred short spears, fiercely striking, whatever suffering there is, with this small suffering of hell, it is also difficult to endure like rain." Seven times more suffering than that is the Black Line Hell, where the body is sawn with an iron saw. Gathering and crushing, grinding in the mountains, mortars, and regions. Crying Hell, burning in a burning iron house. Great Crying Hell, burning in a two-tiered iron house. Sawing black lines on the body with a burning iron saw and then sawing it open, sticking it together and sawing it open again, is the Black Line Hell. 殴打，用兵器刺戳，用锯子锯开，在石臼里捣，在大铜锅里煮，用矛和三叉戟等兵器刺穿，以及用燃烧的铁链像捆绑身体、头和尾巴一样缠绕等等，有无法估量的痛苦。那个地方的，外面的四个方向有十六个近邻：腐烂的泥潭和无法逾越的河流，毛发刀的平原和刀剑树叶的树林，沙拉玛树木从各方面环绕着，地狱众生感受着各种各样的痛苦。在无间地狱的周围，在腐烂的泥潭中，之前的地狱众生从开启的门中出来进入，被许多铁和铜嘴的虫子刺穿并吃掉血肉。他们心想从那里逃脱百条道路，结果出去之后，在灰烬的无法逾越的河流中，血肉被烧焦。如《入行论》中所说：“沉入如同火坑的无法逾越的河流中，血肉全部腐烂，只剩下骨头，颜色如同昆达花。”两边似乎有阎罗卒守护，无法逃脱。在百条道路逃脱的尽头，脚踩在毛发刀的平原上时被割开，抬起脚时又复活，继续行走。刀剑树林中，树木的树枝树叶全部变成刀剑，切割身体。沙拉玛山是铁的尖桩，向上向下地竖立着，攀登和下降时，被狗和鸟等吃掉。这些在四个方向各有四个环绕着，所以称为十六个近邻。在半个中劫中感受痛苦，这是从《正念近住经》中说的。短暂的处所和形体没有定准，在海洋、山、树木、虚空、房屋、岩山等等地方，感受着众生的形体、石头、树木、扫帚、器皿、沙砾和绳索等被使用时的痛苦。不砍断根也是指这个。那些地狱的寿命是：寿命在复活等地狱的六处，与欲天寿命的日夜相同，能够存活那么多年。极热地狱能够存活半个中劫，无间地狱据说能够存活一个中劫。按照之前所说的顺序，将欲界六天寿命的年份加在一起，这六个地狱就是复活地狱

Of that place, the sixteen surrounding areas on the four outer sides are: a swamp of rotting corpses and an impassable river, a plain of hair-razors and a forest of sword-leaf trees, surrounded on all sides by shalmali trees, where hell beings experience various sufferings. Around the Avici hell, in the swamp of rotting corpses, the previous hell beings emerge from the opened gate and enter, pierced and eaten of flesh and blood by many worms with iron and copper beaks. Thinking to escape a hundred paths from there, they go out, but in the impassable river of hot ashes, flesh and bones are burned. As it says in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Sinking into the impassable river, like a pit of fire, all flesh is destroyed, only bones remain, the color of kunda flowers." On both sides, Yama's servants seem to guard, so there is no escape. At the end of escaping a hundred paths, when the foot is placed on the plain of hair-razors, it is cut, and when lifted, it revives and continues to walk. In the forest of swords, all the branches and leaves of the trees become swords, cutting the body. The shalmali mountain is an iron stake, erected upwards and downwards, and when climbing and descending, it is eaten by dogs and birds, etc. These each have four surrounding them in the four directions, so they are called the sixteen surrounding areas. Suffering for half a intermediate kalpa, this is said in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sūtra. The temporary place and form are not fixed, in the ocean, mountains, trees, space, houses, rocky mountains, etc., experiencing the suffering of beings' forms, stones, trees, brooms, utensils, gravel, ropes, etc., being used. Not cutting the root also refers to this. The lifespan of those hells is: the lifespan in the six places of the reviving hell, etc., is the same as the days and nights of the desire realm gods, and they can survive for that many years. The extremely hot hell can survive for half an intermediate kalpa, and the Avici hell is said to survive for one intermediate kalpa. According to the order mentioned earlier, adding together the years of the lifespan of the six desire realm gods, these six hells are the reviving hell.
