Everything is, producing the eminence and definitive goodness of both samsara and nirvana. It should be known that the cause of suffering is non-virtue, which produces all bad destinies and suffering. As it is said in the "Precious Garland": From virtue comes happiness, likewise all good destinies. From non-virtue comes suffering, likewise all bad destinies. Therefore, virtue is of two kinds: those that are in accordance with merit, merely producing the happy result of samsara and eventually being exhausted, such as the ten virtues, the four dhyanas, and the four formless absorptions, which are unrelated to liberation; and those that are in accordance with liberation, conforming to the cause of nirvana. First, the ten virtues in accordance with merit are: the three of body, the four of speech, and the three of mind are pure. These ten, unrelated to dhyana and the formless, merely produce the happy result for the gods and humans of the desire realm. Among these, abandoning killing, not taking what is not given, and sexual misconduct are the three virtuous actions of the body. Abandoning lying, divisive speech, idle chatter, and harsh speech are the four virtuous actions of speech. Abandoning covetousness, malice, and wrong view are the three virtuous actions of the mind. These ten virtues themselves, if not combined with the practice of dhyana and the formless absorptions, then their ripened result is enjoying the happiness of gods and humans in higher realms. That is, obtaining the humans of the four continents and subcontinents and the six desire realm gods. The ten virtues, combined with dhyana and the formless absorptions, give rise to the two higher realms. Virtue produces all kinds of happy destinies and happiness. The ten virtues combined with the four dhyanas, if mastered, give rise to the form realm. The ten virtues combined with the four formless absorptions, when perfected, result in obtaining the four kinds of birth. Among these, the cause of rebirth and the completion of the share of happiness are accomplished by the ten virtues, while the accomplishment of the mind in its own place of formless absorption is accomplished by the successful practice of the formless absorptions. Thus, virtue makes manifest the kinds of happiness and the body that is born in the heavens. The ripened result of the ten virtues is the heavenly and human realms, while the dominant result is the part where the land ripens, adorned with flowers and fruits, without harm and easy to traverse, and so on. The result in accordance with the cause is the virtue that is in accordance with the cause.

False speech is that which alters the thoughts of others. The words and meaning are obvious. Divisive speech is speech that separates others. Unpleasant speech is harsh. All those with afflictions are babblers. Greed is like a bad teaching, Evilly clinging to the wealth of others. Harmful intent is hating sentient beings. Thinking there is no good or non-good, This is wrong view. Just like that. Such small non-virtues lead to rebirth as animals, medium ones lead to rebirth as hungry ghosts, and large ones lead to rebirth in hell; this is the result of maturation. The action that produces a result similar to the cause is that whatever non-virtue is done, one is born there, and what is experienced is a short life, and so on. The dominant result is that the land is full of thorns, and the fruits do not ripen, and so on. If these are said to be only parts, then the result of maturation will be lessened, and one will be liberated from the lower realms, Hundreds of paths are destroyed. Even if one attains the heavenly realms, the suffering there will be realized. Killing leads to short life and many illnesses, Taking what is not given leads to poverty and destitution. Sexual misconduct leads to a household full of enemies. Even if one is born in the heavenly realms due to the residue of karma, One will be short-lived and have many illnesses, be poor, have a dysfunctional family, or be fond of sexual misconduct. Verbal actions: Lying leads to increased slander, Divisive speech leads to the separation of friends and disharmony with each other. Harshness leads to hearing unpleasant sounds, and babbling leads to undignified speech. Even if one has no faults of one's own, one will be increasingly slandered, separated from friends, have disharmonious retinues, always hear unpleasant sounds, and no one will believe one's words; these are the results of the four evil verbal actions. Mental actions: Greed leads to the failure of wishes in the mind, Harmful intent leads to fear, and wrong view leads to evil views. What is thought cannot be accomplished, one is always fearful and apprehensive, and one is born into the kind that slanders the results of karma; these are the results of mental non-virtue. These are also from the "Garland of Jewels": Killing leads to short life, Taking what is not given leads to loss of wealth, Committing adultery leads to being full of enemies, Lying leads to increased slander, Divisive speech leads to separation from friends, Harsh words lead to hearing unpleasant sounds, Babbling leads to undignified speech, Greed destroys wishes in the mind, Harmful intent bestows fear, Wrong view leads to evil views. So it is said. As has been said, these ten non-virtues are like poison.
